Glory Road Movie Review by star757

Glory Road Movie Review by star757

Buy the Movie Poster for Glory Road

I really enjoyed this movie. It is about the Western Texas Division 1 basketball team in the 1960's, and is based on a true story. It stars Josh Lucas as Coach Bob Haskins who comes to Western Texas after coaching high school girls' basketball. The team is not good, and they're just looking for a coach who will take the job. Haskins has a tough time recruiting players without a lot of money or scholarships to offer. He starts recruiting black players because then other schools were not courting them. Haskins ends up with 7 black players and 5 white players on his team. Throughout the movie we follow them as they work to be accepted as a legitimate team. They end up doing well. You will have to watch the movie to see how far they make it, unless you already know the story. You see the racism back them, but the movie focuses on how Haskins coaches them. He wants them to give it their all, work hard, and not let others say they can't do it when they know they can. I liked this movie. It's rated PG, is in good taste, and can be enjoyed by the whole family. You can't say that about many movies nowadays. If you like sports movies about underdogs, you will enjoy this one.

Unstable Fables: 3 Pigs and a Baby Movie Review by LeoRuby

Unstable Fables: 3 Pigs and a Baby Movie Review by LeoRuby

This was cute, animated kids movie with a twist on the three little pigs. It's made by the Jim Henson Company and stars the voices of Brad Garret, Jon Cryer, Steve Zahn, and Jesse McCartney. The three pigs Mason(Garret), Richard(Cryer), and Sandy(Zahn) live in homes of brick, sticks and straw. The movie begins with the Big Bad Wolf trying to blow their houses in. Back in the abandoned warehouse is the rest of the wolf pack watching and guiding him through and ear piece. It's kind of funny to see this as some covert operation. Well, you know how the Big Bad Wolf ends up...he can't blow down the house of bricks and falls into the fire as he tries to enter through the chimney. The wolves are devastated and try to come up with a new plan. Dr. Wolfowicz comes up with "the package". A baby wolf is planted on the pigs doorstep whom they raise as their own son. He is raised as a pig with three dads, attends pig academy, and has a pig for a friend. They even name him Lucky. The funny thing is no one ever seems to notice that he is really a wolf. His three dads all live together as two are still having trouble rebuilding their homes years after the Big Bad Wolf destroyed them. Lucky grows into a teenager, rebels, and feels that he doesn't belong. From here you will have to watch the movie to see what the wolves plan is. Will they eat the three pigs? Will Lucky realize he is a wolf and turn on his dads? Will they stay a family? This is a funny movie with lots of little jokes. It was enjoyable to watch. If you're looking for a different kids movie you will probably like this one.

2 Days in the Valley Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

2 Days in the Valley Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Buy the Movie Poster

“2 Days in the Valley” stars a hot cast that includes Charlize Theron, Jeff Daniels, Danny Aiello, Teri Hatcher, Paul Mazursky, and Glenne Headly. It’s written and directed by John Herzfeld, one whose work I am not familiar with.

The story centers on multiple characters that eventually tie in with each other. We are introduced to each of these characters, one by one, each of them developed very vaguely. The first line of characters that we are introduced to is a slick assassin and a sleazy hitman involved in an insurance scam. Next, a director whose failures as a director have caught up to him and is now suicidal, only if he can find a home for his lovable dog. Then, a crude art dealer with a sweet and innocent assistant. Next, a hot tempered vice police man and his well mannered partner. Finally, two sexy woman who get mixed up in their own scheme.

The film starts developing it’s characters, which in my opinion, is one of the best ways to start off a movie. Without strong characters, the viewers become careless. This crime drama has some very interesting characters that pieced together in the end exceptionally well. This is a film that contains a small amount of black comedy that is overwhelmed by the relentless drama that ensues. This is a good thing. It works much better than adding too much humor and demolishing the action by referring to lame one-liners.

The scene that will grab everyones attention is the exhilarating cat fight between the devilish Charlize Theron and the tough Teri Hatcher. Never before have I seen such a rousing cat fight. “2 Days in the Valley” tries it’s hardest to walk the footsteps of the cult favorite “Pulp Fiction”, but fails to mimic the witty dialog that made “Pulp Fiction” the masterpiece it is. This is still, none the less, an exciting thrill ride from beginning to end. I can’t say that it’s unpredictable because I was never trying to predict it, mainly because I was in a trance.

“2 Days in the Valley” is shocking, edge-of-your-seat entertainment that took me by surprise. Near the end, you will probably find yourself rooting for the sleazy hitman, for he is surprisingly sincere to the ridiculed assistant. The acting was subpar and the script was well written. Even if the dialog lacked some serious wit, it is still somewhat intelligent and has a feel good ending. Spending two days in the valley was an experience I am not likely to forget any time soon. 4/5 stars

Meet the Browns E-card

Lionsgate is offering brand new Ecard for the upcoming movie Meet the Browns

Click on the Poster below to visit the website where you can also register to get messages on your mobile phone from Tyler Perry himself!

SYNOPSIS:

A funny, moving romantic drama about the power of love and family, Lionsgate’s TYLER PERRY’S MEET THE BROWNS marks another winning portrayal of life by writer/director/actor Tyler Perry (DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN, MADEA’S FAMILY REUNION) and features a return to the big screen by Madea, the indomitable, law-breaking, fun-loving grandma.

A single mother living in inner city Chicago, Brenda has been struggling for years to make ends meet and keep her three kids off the street. But when she’s laid off with no warning, she starts losing hope for the first time – until a letter arrives announcing the death of a father she’s never met. Desperate for any kind of help, Brenda takes her family to Georgia for the funeral. But nothing could have prepared her for the Browns, her father’s fun-loving, crass Southern clan. In a small-town world full of long afternoons and country fairs, Brenda struggles to get to know the family she never knew existed…and finds a brand new romance that just might change her life.

Based on the popular stage production of the same name, TYLER PERRY’S MEET THE BROWNS is a charming story about the joys of family, and the possibility of second chances. TYLER PERRY’S MEET THE BROWNS was written and directed by Tyler, and produced by Reuben Cannon.

“Gone Baby Gone” stars Casey Affleck, Michelle Monaghan, Morgan Freeman, Ed Harris, John Ashton, and Amy Ryan. This is Ben Affleck’s directorial debut and the screenplay was written by Ben Affleck and Aaron Stockard. “Gone Baby Gone” also features Amy Ryan’s first academy award nomination.

A four year old girl by the name of Amanda McCready becomes missing. The little girl’s aunt hires two missing person detectives named Patrick Kenzie (Casey Affleck) and Angie Gennero (Michelle Monaghan) to find the truth about what happened to Amanda McCready. Living in a tough neighborhood and not being police officers gives these two detectives a huge advantage on the case.

This is undeniably a really good movie, but I found my mind wondering. It didn’t live up to my expectations. I was ready for a movie that was going to blow me away. Instead I got a critic proof movie and nothing more. The scenes that really kept my interest were the ones that involved academy award nominee Amy Ryan. Even then, I found myself distracted, more interested at the wall in my living room. For a directorial debut, this is a fine job. Maybe it is just me, but I found this somewhat hard to follow. I was totally disoriented until the ending.

I also had a hard time understanding Casey Affleck’s lines considering that he talks through his teeth the whole time. “Gone Baby Gone”, for some strange reason, just didn’t hold my interest. The twist ending that isn’t a happy one, but the right one almost won me over. However, I can’t see myself watching this movie again. I do think that Ben Affleck has more talent behind the camera than in front, but he is none the less talented. Let me put it this way, you won’t be kicking yourself in the ass for not seeing it.

I was somewhat annoyed by Casey Affleck’s performance here, never completely opening up his mouth when he spoke. Amy Ryan has a total of about twenty minutes of screen time, which is probably the most interesting moments of the two hour film. This movie has top-notch acting, it is directed superbly by first timer Ben Affleck, and has you guessing until the end. In other words, Ben Affleck’s directorial debut is strong in most of the critical areas, but it’s just not interesting enough to capture the attention of its audience. It earns a low recommendation. 2.5/5 stars

The Contract Movie Review by star757

The Contract Movie Review by star757

This movie stars Morgan Freeman as an escaped prisoner and John Cusack as the man who finds him. It was ok, but not that great. The story was good, a little suspense, but not that exciting. I think there are better movies out there. The movie begins with John Cusack taking his son on a camping trip. Morgan Freeman plays a man who heads a team of hit men. They take care of "obstacles to progress". He has never messed up until he gets in a car accident and is taken to the hospital. There they discover his true identity, and the US Marshall is sent in to transport him. Along the way his men follow him in an attempt to set him free. They are almost successful, but the car he is in goes over an embankment and he ends up in the river. John Cusack and his son find him with handcuffs on. The movie follows them as they try to outrun his men and get Morgan Freeman to somewhere the police can help them. Throughout the movie you learn a little about Freeman's character and why he is so secretive. He has some tie to the government, but they never really delve into it. The movie ends and you feel they could have told you more. Freeman has this hidden past dealings with people in gov't., but they never really say what. So, it was ok, but could have been better. Basically it's something you'd watch on TV on a lazy Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

2 Days in Paris Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

2 Days in Paris Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

“2 Days in Paris” stars Adam Goldberg and Julie Delpy. It’s also written and directed by Julie Delpy. This is her first film and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Feature.

Jack (Adam Goldberg) is an interior designer who’s girlfriend, Marion (Julie Delpy) is a photographer. The couple spend two days in Paris with Marion’s hippy mother and disrespectful father. During his stay at Paris, Jack runs into people who unknowingly insult him, many of his girlfriend’s past boyfriends, and becomes exposed to disturbing food. All of this leads to Jack’s hatred for the city of Paris. This story tells that it’s not easy being in a relationship, much less to truly know the other one and accept them as who they are.

What makes this film so amazing is how the viewers become so engaged in Jack and Marion’s conversations. One of the conversations that really grabbed my attention was Jack’s theory called “Collective Dynamics of the Small World Network”. Adam Goldberg does a superb job at portraying a character who becomes very stressed out due to his girlfriend’s previous relationships. Taking on the task of acting, writing and directing the movie is a tough thing to do, yet Julie Delpy nails each department. This created a smart, off-beat romantic comedy.

That being said, this was a highly entertaining movie. The music was a sure fit for the film, giving it a more independent feeling. The story is what really makes this movie so great. Yes, “great” being an appropriate adjective here. A wonderful start to a hopefully successful career for Julie Delpy. The acting was convincing and the script is very intelligent. Some excruciatingly funny moments, most of which include Jack becoming agitated by the many men that flirt with his girlfriend.

I deeply recommend this Independent Spirit Award nominee, for it is truly a work of art. “2 Days in Paris” is dominated by superior performances and a kinky, oddball script that’s both intelligent and funny. There is a spectacular amount of heart put into this movie. Not to mention there is a huge amount of chemistry between Adam Goldberg and Julie Delpy that takes this film very far. Don’t neglect this movie. Instead, put it at the top of your list of movies to see. 4.5/5 stars

Awake Movie Review by star757

Awake Movie Review by star757

I thought this was a very good movie. It had an interesting plot with an original story line. It stars Hayden Christiansen as Clayton Beresford, Jr. and Jessica Alba as Sam, his girlfriend. Clayton has a heart condition and is waiting for a transplant. He is one of the most powerful businessmen in New York, his mother adores him, and he keeps his fiancee a secret from her because Sam is her secretary. This movie is nothing like I thought it would be from the previews. I think that is great because all too often now you watch a preview and have seen all the important parts of the movie. There are many twists and turns along the way. In this movie Clayton finally has a heart and rushes to the hospital. His mother tries to convince him to use the top heart surgeon, but he is set on using his surgeon and friend, played by Terrence Howard. Once under anethesia Clayton experiences anesthetic awareness where he cannot move or speak, but can hear and feel everything that goes on. While under he hears the sinister plot by the doctors to kill him. The movie follows him as he leaves his body to look again at the experiences at the past few days to look for clues that he didn't see the first time around. Why would his friend want to kill him? Will he be able to wake up or die on the operating table? What about the new anesthesiologist, because his original one is sick, who was not one of the doctors in on the plan? Will his mother be able to save him? Will his new wife discover the plot? Watch this movie. It is done very well and has many unexpected twists and turns.

Stand by Me Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Stand by Me Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Stand by Me

“Stand By Me” stars a young cast that includes Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell and Co-stars Kiefer Sutherland. It’s directed by Rob Reiner, who later directed the heart-stopping thriller “Misery”.

Based on a novel written by Stephen King, “Stand By Me” was nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay written by Bruce A. Evans and Raynold Gideon. This coming-of-age story centers on a group of young kids who venture on a quest to find a dead body. Along the way, they come across their violent rivals, played by Kiefer Sutherland and his gang, and find out the true meaning of friendship and the way of life.

This is a great adventure film with some spectacular scenes that become embedded in the mind. Most of these scenes involve moments where Gordy, Chris, Teddy, and Vern are all together on-screen, which is about eighty-five percent of the movie, while the other fifteen percent works extremely well also. Rob Reiner is a directer that can certainly get the most out of his actors, regardless of their age. Mixing just the right amount of humor, drama, and suspense, varnishing this movie as a minor gem.

“Stand By Me” is a great coming-of-age story and my personal favorite of Stephen King’s Drama films. Such a well told story that boosted the careers of a talented group of youngsters who all ended up with somewhat successful careers. I didn’t forget about Kiefer Sutherland, who adds more reality and suspense to the film as the havoc inducing freak. This deserves all the praise it has gotten over the years. The fact that the makers had the ability to put forth a movie that was honest, suspenseful, and full of heart to the DVD stacks of many critics and audiences is a marvelous achievement in cinema.

A truthful and overwhelming film that is sure to leave a lump in your throat. It struck a cord with it’s viewers, even holding back on the violence and language enough to allow mature preteens to enjoy. This has some powerful moments and ones that are sure to stick in you memory. I recommend it to the very few who haven’t discovered this tribute to friendship and growing up. It’s truly a must-see movie. Ask anyone. 5/5 stars

Martian Child Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Martian Child Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Martian Child

“Martian Child” stars John Cusack and Bobby Coleman, and co-stars Amanda Peet, Joan Cusack, Oliver Platt, and Sophie Okonedo. It’s directed by Menno Meyjes, who has worked previously with John Cusack for the movie ”Max”, and the screenplay was written by Seth Bass and Jonathan Tolins.

David (John Cusack) remembers what it is like being different as a child. After the death of his wife, David decides to adopt a child. When he comes across a foster child by the name of Dennis (Bobby Coleman), who believes that he is from Mars, he decides to adopt this being and find the true child inside of him. After spending some quality time with Dennis, David finds himself questioning his own beliefs.

The breakthrough performance by Bobby Coleman as the Martian Child is delightful and as always John Cusack give a pleasant performance as the confused dad. This is sure to put a smile on your face and bring tears to your eyes. This has a striking resemblance to “K-Pax”, but doesn’t use the material in a similar way. Instead, it makes the material more interesting and suitable for the whole family. I enjoyed the concept and the way it was put to use, which makes me admire the adorable screenplay.

Given that the director has previously worked with John Cusack, this gives him the ability to have a better feel of what the actor wants. In this case, it really shows. The chemistry between John Cusack and Bobby Coleman is endearing and charming. There are very few things that I disliked about it. I thought that the last scene was played out a little too long, but it still works out for the better. The score worked really well for me, making the movie even more fun than it already was. Kids might lose interest, but I can almost assure that everyone else will be waiting for that wonderful and heartwarming ending the film has in store.

If your a fan of John Cusack and his overlooked talent, then by all means check out this movie. Bobby Coleman does a good job, but considering that the movie is getting bad ratings, this just might be his only movie. Hopefully someone will recognize this young boy’s talent and cast him for a role in an upcoming film. This is an adorable movie that deserves more praise for the stellar performances and it’s touching story. Watch it and tell me that you wouldn’t want to adopt such an eccentric child as this one. 4/5 stars

The Chronicles of Narnia Movie Review by star757

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe Movie Review by star757

Buy the Chronicles of Narnia Movie Poster

I thought this was a wonderfully made movie. The scenery, characters, etc. are very vivid. This movie is based on the Book by C.S. Lewis. I read the book several years ago and thought the movie did a great job, although I'm sure there were some differences. The book is very good to, and I would recommend it. This movie is about four siblings, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy. They are sent to live with an old professor is his huge mansion in the country after the bombing of London in WWII. One day while playing hide and seek Lucy discovers a huge wardrobe that transports her to a magical land once she passes through the back of it. This is Narnia where the terrible White Witch has taken over and it has been winter for 100 years. Lucy has trouble convincing her siblings of her discovery, but soon they all end up in Narnia. They meet interesting characters like the fawn, Mr. Tumnus, and the beavers. Also, there is Aslan the powerful lion with a good heart. The children learn of a prophecy that two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve will come to save Narnia and become queens and kings. The children do not believe this at first. What will become of Narnia? Will the White Witch continue to rule? Can and will the children help? Will they ever return home through the wardrobe? This was a great movie, good for families, although there is some violence. I really enjoyed this movie. It's very visual with all the interesting creatures that live in Narnia and the beautiful scenes. I would recommend this as a great movie to watch.

Silent Warnings Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Silent Warnings Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

“Silent Warnings” stars a cast composed mainly unknown actors and actresses, aside from the cameo appearance by Stephen Baldwin. It’s directed by Christian McIntire (Velocity Trap) and the story is written by Kevin Grendreau.

After his cousins death, Layne Vossimer (who has appeared in many TV shows) heads to visit his cousin’s farm with some of his friends to hang out there. Upon arrival, the group sees that the farm house is a wreck. After getting settled, some strange crop circles appear in the corn fields. This leads them to believe that the locals are playing tricks on them, until they discover the unimaginable.

“Silent Warnings” tells it’s story in the time span of several days. This Sci-Fi flick has some moments that I found entertaining, but it has all been done before. This is clearly a bad rip-off of “Signs”. It gets more interesting as the days pass by and you become more anticipated at what the alien will look like, leading to a ultimately disappointing alien shown near the end. After the mold for the alien suit didn’t come out correctly, the film makers decided to use CGI. This was a bad idea.

Director Christian McIntire doesn’t do a bad job at directing this Sci-Fi flick, but doesn’t shine either. The only real issues this movie has is the fact that it tries to hard at the end and the material has been used before. Even leaving the alien suit deformed and cheap looking would have made this movie much more amusing. Instead, the director decided to try to create a creepy and stylish alien picture. This all worked until the aliens were shown on screen. After that, it wasn’t anywhere near scary, or creepy for that matter. What started off as a cut above average sci-fi movie, ended up having a crowded ending.

The score sounded familiar, like it has been used in many different Sci-Fi movies. The best acting on the screen was done by Stephen Baldwin, who made the cameo appearance as cousin Joe. Lacking intelligence and the ability to create a suitable rip-off, Christian McIntire does have talent, but wasted it on rehashed material. This will lead to many movie critics and fans looking down on him for having no originality. This just might be the last we will hear from director Christian McIntire. 2/5 stars

American Gangster Movie Review by armchaircritic

American Gangster Movie Review by armchaircritic

Buy Movie Poster for American Gangster

America's love/hate interest with the cool criminal continues with American Gangster, the latest movie following the rise and fall of a powerful crime lord. This movie, set mostly in New Jersey during the 1970s, takes us on two parallel paths: the gangster and the police officer after him.

Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) is the bodyguard, enforcer, and go-to man for a gangster in Harlam. When Frank's boss dies, Frank treats the drug trade like a business. He travels to Thailand to arrange for shipments of pure heroin to the U.S. (with help from the military), gives it his own name, and sells it cheaper than others are. This works perfectly and quickly catapulds Frank to success: When Frank likens his product to Pepsi in name regognition and reputation, it's a twisted but appropriate comparison.

Frank also strives for independence and professionalism. He doesn't work for anyone, placing himself at the top and having others work under him. He avoids flashy clothes or an ostentatious lifestyle (when he wears a big mink coat and hat from his wife, that comes back to haunt him twoce), hires his relatives as much as possible, and maintains necessary business relationships (usually commenting "My man" to whoever he makes an arrangement with) while killing anyone who gets in his way.

On the other side of this tale is Detective Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe). Richie is a policeman whose integrity gets him in trouble from both criminals and his fellow police. Continually honest -- at the opening of the film he and his partner find almost a million dollars, which Richie makes them turn in -- Richie struggles against a seemingly endless tide of crooks and crooked policemen who have much more money than he does. (This character is not a paragon of virtue: His womanizing costs him his marriage and child.)

Director Ridley Scott manages to get the perfect results from his actors in American Gangster. Denzel Washington is intensely focused without going overboard, creating a protagonist whose focus is solely on his success, not on the dangers or consequences. Russell Crowe gives us an honest, hard-working guy who's weary from tilting at windmills but keeps at it because it's the right thing to do. And the supporting cast is quite good, though the focus is clearly on the two leads. The culture of the 1970s is also reflected in the news coverage of the war in Vietnam, which goes up and down along with the fortunes of Frank Lewis.

Be sure to check out American Gangster for an intelligent, exciting, and very well-acted drama about crime, honesty, business, and the American dream.

Osmosis Jones Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Osmosis Jones Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Buy Movie Poster for Osmosis Jones

“Osmosis Jones” stars Bill Murray, Elena Franklin, Molly Shannon, and the voices of Chris Rock, Laurence Fishbourne, David Hyde Pierce, Brandy Norway, William Shatner, and Ron Howard. It’s directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly, formerly known for their most famous movie ”There’s Something About Mary”.

Frank (Bill Murray) is probably the most unsanitary human alive. He eats anything that isn’t good for him. This leaves hard work for Osmosis Jones (Chris Rock), a white blood cell working for Frank’s immune system, and a cold pill named Drix (David Hyde Pierce). Not to mention a deadly sickness that goes by the name of Thrax (Laurence Fishbourne) has entered Frank’s body and is determined to set a record in the medical books for killing a human quicker than any other sickness.

A sometimes clever, but mostly disgusting film thats casting for Bill Murray was one of the wisest choices made by the film makers. The real problem with this animated/live action flick is the fact that it really isn’t that funny. It may be smart, but for it to work it needs to polish up on the humor. I was more grossed-out than amused. Chris Rock as White Blood Cell was a funny thought. The acting done by little Elena Franklin was very sloppy. The animation was pretty good, but really nothing you would regret missing.

Most people like to know about the sound. That is a big aspect for animated films. This one has many sound effects, the problem is that they are mainly sounds that aren’t very pleasant (farts, burps, ect.). A decent animated film that could have been funnier with the cast provided. Elena Franklin really destroys some of the moments in the movie with her careless performance, especially near the end.

While watching “Osmosis Jones”, I felt like pausing the movie to go take a shower and brush my teeth. It’s sometimes smart but most of the time it’s just plain nasty. Just not enough laughs and too much disgusting moments to pass as a recommendation. If you have kids, having them watch this might make them change their mind about eating their vegetables. I highly doubt it though. The moral of this movie is to eat healthy and keep clean so you don’t end up popping a pimple or throwing up on someone you are talking to. 2.5/5 stars

Official Synopsis:
Can you get a life and discover love, all in one day? Two women are about to find out. In the sophisticated and heartfelt comedy Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Academy Award winner Frances McDormand plays the film’s title role opposite Academy Award nominee Amy Adams (star of the blockbuster Enchanted). The cast also includes Golden Globe Award nominee Lee Pace (of the hit series Pushing Daisies), Ciarán Hinds (There Will Be Blood), Shirley Henderson (the Harry Potter films), Mark Strong (Stardust), and screen newcomer Tom Payne.

In 1939 London, Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (played by Ms. McDormand) is a middle-aged governess who finds herself once again unfairly dismissed from her job. Without so much as severance pay, Miss Pettigrew realizes that she must – for the first time in two decades – seize the day. This she does, by intercepting an employment assignment outside of her comfort level – as “social secretary.” Arriving at a penthouse apartment for the interview, Miss Pettigrew is catapulted into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse (Ms. Adams). Within minutes, Miss Pettigrew finds herself swept into a heady high-society milieu – and, within hours, living it up. Taking the “social secretary” designation to heart, she tries to help her new friend Delysia navigate a love life and career, both of which are complicated by the three men in Delysia’s orbit; devoted pianist Michael (Mr. Pace), intimidating nightclub owner Nick (Mr. Strong), and impressionable junior impresario Phil (Mr. Payne). Miss Pettigrew herself is blushingly drawn to the gallant Joe (Mr. Hinds), a successful designer who is tenuously engaged to haughty fashion maven Edythe (Ms. Henderson) – the one person who senses that the new “social secretary” may be out of her element, and schemes to undermine her. Over the next 24 hours, Guinevere and Delysia will empower each other to discover their romantic destinies.

“The Legend of Bagger Vance” stars Matt Damon, Will Smith, Charlize Theron, and co-stars Bruce McGill, Joel Gretsch, and J. Michael Moncrief. It’s directed by the legendary Robert Redford and based on a novel written by Steven Pressfield.

Rannulph Junah (Matt Damon) is known as the greatest golfer in Savannah, Georgia but, after fifteen years of fighting in the First World War, he returns to Savannah a changed man. A drunk, careless man who lost his “Swing”. Now, with the help of a mysterious caddy named Bagger Vance (Will Smith), Junah will remember how to swing and the meaning of life.

Will Smith plays a character who is almost constantly beaming and every sentence sounds like it came from a fortune cookie. This doesn’t stop this movie from being an undeniably entertaining golf drama. An inspirational film that captures the life of a man who is determined to get back his life playing the game he loves the most. Director Robert Redford is an expert at making these sappy yet inspirational dramas into a movie that can easily be watched more than once. The story is well narrated by Jack Lemmon, who has that perfected tone for narration.

Matt Damon give a miraculous performance. Will Smith does a good job at making a character that you know is cheesy into a very likable character. The score has your usual enlightening melodies that come with movies like “The Natural” and “Field of Dreams”. You know, the type that give you goosebumps and brings tears to your eyes. This is a very uplifting movie. The characters are only acceptable considering they are from a novel. This may be the best golf drama that I have seen, due to the fact that I am not a fan to “Tin Cup” or golf for that matter.

It deserves a look. The script is what really makes this movie pleasant, even if it is a little mushy at times. “The Legend of Bagger Vance” is chalk full of witty and meaningful dialog, usually served up by the walking, talking fortune cookie Bagger Vance. This is a good, but not great film that may only get praised due to the first-class direction and the well written script. Most of these inspirational flicks don’t go too well for me, but this one is an exception. 3.5/5 stars

Heartbreak kid Movie Review by Armchaircritic

Heartbreak kid Movie Review by Armchaircritic

Buy Heartbreak Kid Movie Poster

What do you get when you mix the Farrelly brothers with the comedy of Ben Stiller? Well, one kind of messed up film with an interesting premise, that mostly doesn't work throughout The Heartbreak Kid.

Ben Stiller plays Eddie Cantrow, a mostly successful sports goods store owner in San Francisco who is single and longs for finding the perfect woman. On the rebound, he thinks he finds her in a chance street encounter, in Lila (Malin Ackerman). After a hasty courtship, and a rushed wedding, they are off on their honeymoon. However, the honeymoon ends during the honeymoon (actually on the drive to it). Set in a Mexican resort, Eddie discovers that his new wife is not the woman of his dreams, and can't even stand her! Instead he falls for Miranda (Michelle Ackerman) who really seems just perfect for him. Ben's real life father, Jerry Stiller plays, in what is undoubtedly a stretch for him, Eddie's father.

I think the premise of The Heartbreak Kid is clever enough, but then goes off into a series of not so funny scenes that make you think that all the characters are clearly nuts. I generally don't like Ben Stiller films, and this one fits the mold of more silliness than substance.

Buy the Movie Poster for The Hoax

The Hoax is a film that looks at the greatest literary hoax ever attempted. It is based on a true story. It stars Richard Gere, and Marcia Gay Harden.

Richard Gere portrays Clifford Irving, a struggling author. After his latest book is killed by a prerelease review, he needs to come up with something big, no make that really big to take the literary world by storm. He decides to come up with an authorized biography of Howard Hughes, the more than eccentric billionaire that hadn't been seen in years. Forging a release that authorizes the biography, Irving takes us on a journey of lies and deception that remind me of the phrase "if you're gonna tell a lie, make it a big one." Along the way, assisted by a coauthor, and his wife, Elizabeth (Marcia Gay Harden) this threesome take their publisher along for a ride when they run out of excuses, they simply attribute whatever weirdness to Howard Hughes' eccentricity. Ironically, the book is never published, but the account of the hoax got published and formed the basis of the film.

The Hoax is an enjoyable look at how far some folks will go to deceive when their back is up against a wall. Every time you think that a sane man would just come clean, they manage to take this whole thing one step further. The one standout feature of the film is that it takes place in 1971, and they did manage to recapture the early '70's in fashion, autos, decorations, and just about everything else. The Hoax is an eccentric look at trying to get to know an even more eccentric subject.

Night at the Museum Movie Review by dittlit

Night at the Museum Movie Review by dittlit

Larry Daley, (Ben Stiller) is a divorced father of a 10 year old child, that just cannot seem to hold a job or provide a stable environment to have his son visit more. After several failed attempts at finding a job, Larry finally lands an interview at the the Museum of Natural History in New York. He meets three older, quite crazy night watchmen, and the fun ensues. About 30 minutes into his first shift, the museum comes alive, with the T-Rex bones, seemingly attacking him. After a quick glance at the instructions left for him he realizes that the T-Rex is only looking to play fetch. As he walks around the museum, anything and everything comes alive including, Attila the Hun, African Animals, Teddy Roosevelt, and a quite comical miniature cowboy (Owen Wilson), and Octavius, the Roman leader. As the whole chaos ensues, Larry befriends Teddy Roosevelt who helps restore order that night. There are several comic scenes with a monkey named Dexter. He wants to quit, but cannot because his son is counting on him, as well as meeting a love interest. While I thought the movie had some funny parts, when everything came to live, it was really lacking a story. The son in the movie does not seem believable, and the whole relationship between Larry and him is hastily done. Almost as if it were added in to fill time, as was the relationship between the attractive museum tour guide and Larry, and also the relationship between him and his x wife. The movie tried to tie each of the three relationships in, but it was really poorly done. There was very little character development, which was disappointing. They should have went further with each, or completely cut them out. You will have a couple laughs, but overall the movie was disappointing. If you need an Owen Wilson and Ben Stiller movie watch Zoolander, or Meet the Parents. If it is on tv I would suggest watching it, but I would not suggest renting it.

This was a cute movie, a good movie for families to watch together. It stars Ben Stiller as a man that can never has a steady job, but who is looking for one to provide more stability for his son who mainly lives with his ex-wife. He finds a job at the Museum of Natural History as the night watchman because they are laying off the other guards. Dick Van Dyke plays the head security guard who gives Stiller little information about his new job. The first night he finds out that all the people and animals in the museum come alive and stay that way until dawn. It's a pretty funny movie, although I thought it could have been a little better. It reminded me of a similar idea as the movie Jumanji, which I think is a lot better. Every night he has to keep everything under control and let nothing leave or it will turn to dust at dawn. The museum in under the spell of the Tablet of Akmen Rah. Stiller's character gets some help from Teddy Roosevelt, played by Robin Williams. Will he be able to keep this job? How will he control the museum at night? What else have the old security guards not told him? This makes a good family movie.

Alien Nation Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Alien Nation Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Alien Nation

“Alien Nation” stars James Caan and Mandy Patinkin. It co-stars many individuals that are probably unheard of by many, but that doesn’t stop this from being a particularly engaging sci-fi flick. It’s directed by Graham Baker and written by Rockne S. O’Bannon. A few years into the future, humans become acquainted with aliens known as “Newcomers” or “Slags”. These humanoids, like humans, have those who are good and those who are bad. They even have the oldest profession in the book down as their top profession. Det. Sgt. Mathew Sykes (James Caan) is on the lookout for a Newcomer fugitive on the loose who is responsible for the death of his partner. His new partner Det. Sam ‘George’ Francisco (Mandy Patinkin), a friendly Newcomer, is aiding Mathew on his quest. The only problem is that Mathew is racist against Newcomers, for one of them are responsible for his partner’s death. Humans eat cooked beef, while Newcomers eat uncooked beaver. We have a drug called Heroine, while they have a drug called ss’jabroka, more potent than any human drug. We have hair, they have markings on their heads. These are just a few of the differences between humans and Newcomers. Their differences clash with social issues throughout the movie (including discrimination). This has a great concept put to good use with actors James Caan and Mandy Patinkin, who demonstrate surprisingly superior performances. I thought the make-up was exceptional on a certain level of faddism. Nominated for four minor awards, winning the biggest one of them all (Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film), this was an enjoyable flick with a great premise and well shot action sequences. A mix between the buddy cop and sci-fi thriller genres. With more cop action than sci-fi activity, this does take a turn from a movie that could have been done better with more sci-fi effects added to it. Some luscious performances, especially from James Caan, help the film gain enough strength to become a minor cult classic. This will surely satisfy the taste bud of fans of minor cult favorites. Adding some humor and a solemn relationship between a human and a newcomer, I recommend that you take the time to rent “Alien Nation”. A fresh style in front and behind the camera sure help out a movie that is has a small budget but a big heart. If only this flick had more science fiction added to the ordinary buddy cop storyline, only then this would easily qualify as a true classic. 4/5 stars

Why Did I Get Married? Movie Review by armchaircritic

Why did I get Married Movie Review by armchaircritic

Buy the Movie Poster for Why did I get married

I've enjoyed Tyler Perry's previous works, and on face value, they are fine. However, there always seemed to be an element of the more serious missing from his films, and we thought that Perry could deal with a more serious subject. Well, this time out, he takes up the issue of infidelity and midlife crisis among a set of African American couples, and almost makes it through the movie without anyone donning a fat suit in Why Did I Get Married?

These four couples have an annual retreat, and it is a time to do some exercises, and meet up with friends. They have been doing this since they all graduated college together. One of them is a psychology professor, and writes books about their experience. This time, when they meet up in snowy Colorado, one of the husbands decides to bring his mistress along, as well as his wife! While at first the rest are condemning of this obvious and blatant infidelity, as Why Did I Get Married? progresses, we realize that each of the couples is dealing with its own set of challenges.

When I first read the back of the box, I was wondering if this was going to be one of these films where everyone is just sitting around "chewing the cud" for 120 minutes, and no conclusion is ever reached. Thankfully, this is not the case. Perry takes on the emotionally charged subject of marriages at the decade mark, as the characters approach the age for a case of midlife crisis. Thankfully, while the serious is there, there is enough comedy thrown in to keep the experience enjoyable as we work towards a conclusion for each of the characters.

Overall, this film is considerably more serious than his other works. There's no fried chicken jokes, and we don't end up in the more stereotypical Atlanta ghetto that his last movie showed. Perry is quite talented as he wrote the screenplay, directed the film, and acted in it as well, so this film makes it on his talent above anyone elses. Finally, Perry lets someone else wear the fat suit this time out. I recommend it to Perry fans, and those looking at a new view into this complicated subject matter.

The Brave One Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

The Brave One Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for The Brave One

“The Brave One” stars two time academy award winner Jodie Foster, Terrance Howard, Naveen Andrews, and Nicky Katt. It’s directed by Neil Jordon (The Crying Game) and the screenplay is written by Roderick Taylor and Bruce A. Taylor. A radio host named Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) and her fiance David (Naveen Andrews) are brutally attacked while walking their dog. Erica Bain survived the attack, but unfortunately her fiance didn’t. Now, with revenge on her mind, she sets out to find the ones who destroyed her life and took her dog, killing every criminal that gets in her way. How many wrongs does it take to make things right? It does start off a little slow, but it picks up the pace near the end. Jodie Foster give another fantastic performance. ”The Brave One” recieved a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actress, but didn’t win. The story is cliched and predictable, but Jodie Foster keeps us on her side. She shows her powerful acting skills, especially near the end. Terrance Howard does a terrific job as the honest detective on the Vigilante case. The score fits the film, unlike this years disappointing Vigilante thriller “Death Sentence”. The photography was a bit sketchy. Director of photography (Philippe Rousselot) makes the film somewhat disorienting. Every once in a while the camera goes from being cocked to the left, to being cocked to the right. Other than the photography, this is a true crowd pleaser. Director Neil Jordon does a great job at getting the actors and actresses to really shine. Some scenes are well shot but others are shot unstable. This easily deserves my recommendation. Jodie Foster accomplished a fearless and difficult role for a well mannered woman, such as herself. A tad bit long, considering the film was lacking in tons of action, but this doesn’t effect the need to see this movie. The jaw-dropping ending is what puts the icing on the cake. I was very impressed at how everything worked out. A compelling look at how you can push the limits of any normal person into being a powerful killing machine. 4/5 stars

Undead or Alive Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Undead or Alive by Derek_Fleek

“Undead Or Alive” stars Chris Kattan, James Denton, Navi Rawat, and Brian Posehn. It’s directed by first time director Glasgow Phillips and the story is written by first time writer Scott Pourroy. After robbing the sheriff of the town, Elmer Winslow, an army recruit, (James Denton) and Luke Budd, a local cowboy, (Chris Kattan) are now on the run. Sheriff Claypool ends up getting bit by a zombie and is now creating a blood thirsty regime to hunt down Elmer and Luke. Joining Elmer and Luke on their escape from the sheriff is an female warrior out to exact revenge on those who killed her people. Their plan goes haywire when the group finds out that everyone around them are now zombies. The special effects for such a low budget film are pretty good. Everything else goes straight down the drain. “Undead or Alive” features an emotional cowboy that doesn’t know how to spit, zombies that negotiate, and horrible music that doesn’t suit the western genre. It does have a promising beginning that clearly states that this is going to be a spoof. The only decent role was played by Brian Posehn as the dead head zombie. Most of the jokes are lame and childish. Maybe one squeezed a “Ha” out of me. An excruciatingly unfunny zombie western that has a juvenile script and ignorant characters. The artificial relationship between Chris Kattan and Navi Rawat is revolting. As you can see, this spoof generated nothing but annoyance. By the time the slow motion act involving Chris Kattan comes into play, you will be wishing you were belly up. Poorly directed by Glasgow Phillips, who obviously was going for something campy and fun, but ends up with a nearly unwatchable zombie western. A horrendously bad movie. Take my advise and save your money. Burn every copy. It was a waste of time you could be spending watching a more entertaining horror comedy. This movie is as dead as they come. “Undead Or Alive” has some extremely crippled jokes, and the ending is just as tasteless as the film, involving skipping zombies. I will never, ever watch this movie again. 1/5 stars

Murder by Death Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Murder by Death Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

“Murder By Death” stars Eileen Brennan, Truman Capote, James Coco, Peter Falk, David Niven, Alec Guinness, Elsa Lanchester, Peter Sellers, and Maggie Smith. It’s directed by Robert Moore and the screenplay was written by Neil Simon.

A millionaire named Lionel Twain (Truman Capote) invites five of the worlds greatest detectives to solve a murder that has yet to happen. During the nine o’clock dinner, Lionel Twain tells his guests that the murder is to occur at exactly twelve o’clock by someone sitting at the dinner table. The detective that solves the murder shall receive the large sum of one million dollars. Before long, a silent scream leads them to the body of the blind butler. Will the world greatest detectives be able to solve a crime that hasn’t occurred yet?

This parody of the earlier murder mystery detective stories of the 30’s and 40’s is sometimes funny, but not hilarious. The story has many twists and turns that will keep you guessing, even when you think you have solved the mystery. A goofy mystery that has many jokes, some of which hit the mark, while others flat. The acting was on par for satires like this one. The movie does seem to drag on, making it feel like a two hour movie. It does have a few laugh out loud moments, but for this film to work, it has to be funny constantly.

“Murder By Death” doesn’t have enough laughs to keep the viewers throughly entertained. I did enjoy Truman Capote’s role, which was the most engaging character in the movie. Director Robert Moore failed to show compassion for the actors and their character, creating a film that was later made into a better parody of mystery stories titled “Clue”. Unlike “Clue”, this film has a script that is mildly funny as to being consistently funny.

Would I recommend “Murder By Death”? I don’t think so. This is a dated version of the widely popular game turned to movie “Clue”. I found out the hard way that it isn’t worth sitting through the whole movie to get to the numerous twist and turns at the end. It’s not a bad film as much as it is a tired one. A slightly funny, yet dragging movie that is far from the spectacular spoof it tries so hard to be. Good effort, but doesn’t succeed in delivering top-notch humor. 2.5/5 stars

The Lookout Movie review by armchaircritic

The Lookout Movie Review by armchaircritic

Buy Movie Poster for The Lookout

While some crime dramas focus on the execution of the crime, others are more concerned with the human element and the people involved with the crime. Both elements blend together in The Lookout: how the people get brought into the situation is as significant as the situation itself.
Chris Pratt (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a popular high-school hockey star whose reckless driving kills two passengers in his car, injured a third, and leaves him physically and mentally damaged. Four years later, Chris has trouble holding things, trouble remembering things (he keeps a notebook with important things to do), and trouble sequencing -- remembering the order of things as simple as his daily routine. Chris cleans a bank (that won't let him try being a teller), lives with his blind friend Lewis (Jeff Daniels), and dealing with his family. Chris is frustrated that his life has changed so much and feels helpless and angry at his situation.

Chris meets Gary Spargo (Matthew Goode) at a bar, and they seem to hit it off immediately. Gary shares some of Chris' frustrations, listens to him, and even hooks him up with an atttractive lady named Luvlee (Ilsa Fisher). It isn't hard to see that Gary has an ulterior motive, and it soon comes out: Gary and his associates are planning to rob the bank Chris works at, and they want him to help. They need Chris to act as the lookout, warning them if Deputy Ted (Sergio Di Zio) stops by. Gary plays on Chris' feelings of helplessness, offering him a glimpse of a better life: "My old man used to say to me, probably the only thing we ever really agreed on, was that whoever has the money has the power. You might wanna jot that down in your book. It's something you're gonna need to remember."

The Lookout does a very good job of drawing us into Chris' world. From his daily recitations of what he does each day ("Once upon a time, I woke up. I took a shower. With soap.") to his frustration with family and friends, Chris is a very real and very sympathetic character thanks to Joseph Gordon-Levitt's powerful performance. The supporting cast also does an excellent job, from Gary's effective manipulation -- it seems he spent as much time casing out Chris as the bank -- to Lewis' combination of pragmatism and optimism that is so lacking in Chris. If you want to check out a very good crime drama, take a look at The Lookout.

Mr. Brooks Movie Review by star757

Mr. Brooks Movie Review by star757

This movie is about a serial killer. It was pretty gross at times, although there is not killing throughout the whole movie. I found it to be a weird movie with an unfinished ending. Kevin Costner plays Mr. Brooks, a rich businessman who is addicted to killing. At the beginning of the movie he is named businessman of the year. He has not killed for 2 years, he is known as the "Thumbprint Killer", but his alter ego who is always with him, played by William Hurt, encourages him to get back into killing. Throughout the movie you see that Mr. Brooks doesn't want to kill, but can't stop either. To throw a twist in comes Mr. Smith, played by Dane Cook, who took a picture of Mr. Brooks at his last killing. What does he want from Mr. Brooks? Will he turn him in? Throughout the movie we see the detective, played by Demi Moore, who has been on the case of Brooks. Will she find him? Or will she be killed by the serial killer newly escaped from jail who is after her? Woven into the story is also Mr. Brooks daughter who has just quit college and returned home. She is pregnant and Mr. Brooks is sure there is something else behind why she came home. What is the real truth about his daughter? This was an interesting movie, but sick at the same time. Things are somewhat finished at the end, but all loose ends are not tied up as in some murder/suspense movies. Will they find out who Mr. Brooks really is?

Heavy Metal Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Heavy Metal Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Heavy Metal

"Heavy Metal" features the voices of John Candy, Eugene Levy, Joe Flaherty, Harvey Atkin, and many more. It’s directed by Gerald Potterton and features a total of six dark and erotic short stories told by a glowing sphere brought to earth by an astronaut.

The first story is called “"Harry Canyon". This story centers on a taxi cab driver in futuristic New York who picks up a sexy woman being chased by thugs that desire the Loc-Nar that this damsel in distress is carrying. The second story is called "The Den". It’s about a nerdy eighteen year old boy who find a green meteorite in his back yard that teleports him to a land where he is now buff and is desired by woman. The third is "Captain Sternn". The title character stands accused in a trial that the mysterious Loc-Nar throws into a bizarre chase scene. The forth is called "B-17". It involves a bomber plane that gets hit and most of the crew dies, only to be resurrected by the Loc-Nar into zombies. The fifth is "So Beautiful, So Dangerous". This one involves stoned aliens and a horny robot that abduct a human. The last story is called "Taarna", where a woman named Taarna is the only person left to destroy people turned murderous savages by the Loc-Nar.

Wow. This was an awesome animated thrill-ride filled with gore, action, and great music. "Heavy Metal" is a cult classic that will be marinate in the minds of those who watch it. The animation lives up to the comic feel that the animators were trying to grasp. I can now see where cartoonist Bill Plympton (I Married A Strange Person) got his inspiration from. Featuring music by Black Sabbath, Sammy Hagar, Blue Oyster Cult and many other rock bands, this is one of the most bizarre and artistic animated movies I have come across in my many years of watching films.

The sound was spectacular. It is probably the most remarkable achievements in the film. I enjoyed "So Beautiful, So Dangerous" the most out of all six of the seductive stories told by the Loc-Nar. In the end, you might find yourself wondering what the whole thing was about. Hopefully, this is what the creators were trying to do. A mind-blowing movie experience that was surprisingly coherent until the end. A very engaging and, at times, jaw-dropping sci/fi cult classic that will disgust many, while others will be delightfully entertained.

By all means, take the time to see this fantasy that has been hailed as "Controversial Material". You will be either appalled by the many acts of rape, gore, and drug use, or you will be having one hell of a time. For me, this is guilty pleasure. I was amazed that I was actually understanding what was going on. A wildly amusing film that does wonders with the mind and tickle the funny bone.Love it or hate it, you can't help but admire a few things: First-rate animation, astonishing sound, great music, and an imagination one can’t duplicate. 4.5/5 stars

American Gangster Movie Review by star757

American Gangster Movie Review by star757

I thought this was a pretty good movie. Going into I saw that it was 2hr and 38 min and thought it would be a long night as it was late when we started it, but the movie kept you watching the whole time. This movie is about drugs; they show people shooting up, snorting drugs, and making drugs. Also there is some violence and nudity...this is definitely not for children of any age. This movie is about Frank Lucas, played by Denzel Washington, a man who rises as a drug lord in New York in the late 60's/early 70's. It is based on a true story. His boss dies at the beginning of the movie and he looks for a way to take over and make money. Throughout the movie you see how he tries to blend in and not be known as a crazy, well known drug dealer. He's a millionaire and keeps company with sports stars and others. Along side this story line we see Jersey cop Richie Roberts, played by Russell Crowe. He's an honest cop who takes flack for that as most in the area are corrupt. When he's not at work though, he is womanizing and losing his son because of his unacceptable friends. Because of his honest work as a cop he is put in charge of the new drug enforcement team where they are looking to take down the big drug lords, not the small time junkies and dealers. They want to find the source of "Blue Magic" a very potent heroin that is stronger and cheaper than the competition's drugs. Where will Robert's investigations lead him? Will Frank Lucas be found out or stay under the radar? How does he get this stronger than normal heroin? Will Roberts and Frank's paths collide? One thing I did not realize about this movie is that Crowe and Washington are not in that many scenes together. I thought it was about Crowe chasing Washington through the whole movie, but it takes a while before Crowe discovers which drug boss is the real leader. I thought this was a good movie with a good story line and well developed plot. A lot goes on, but as you watch you see how it all fits together. Definitely worth a watch.
