American Gangster Movie Review by star757

American Gangster Movie Review by star757

I thought this was a pretty good movie. Going into I saw that it was 2hr and 38 min and thought it would be a long night as it was late when we started it, but the movie kept you watching the whole time. This movie is about drugs; they show people shooting up, snorting drugs, and making drugs. Also there is some violence and nudity...this is definitely not for children of any age. This movie is about Frank Lucas, played by Denzel Washington, a man who rises as a drug lord in New York in the late 60's/early 70's. It is based on a true story. His boss dies at the beginning of the movie and he looks for a way to take over and make money. Throughout the movie you see how he tries to blend in and not be known as a crazy, well known drug dealer. He's a millionaire and keeps company with sports stars and others. Along side this story line we see Jersey cop Richie Roberts, played by Russell Crowe. He's an honest cop who takes flack for that as most in the area are corrupt. When he's not at work though, he is womanizing and losing his son because of his unacceptable friends. Because of his honest work as a cop he is put in charge of the new drug enforcement team where they are looking to take down the big drug lords, not the small time junkies and dealers. They want to find the source of "Blue Magic" a very potent heroin that is stronger and cheaper than the competition's drugs. Where will Robert's investigations lead him? Will Frank Lucas be found out or stay under the radar? How does he get this stronger than normal heroin? Will Roberts and Frank's paths collide? One thing I did not realize about this movie is that Crowe and Washington are not in that many scenes together. I thought it was about Crowe chasing Washington through the whole movie, but it takes a while before Crowe discovers which drug boss is the real leader. I thought this was a good movie with a good story line and well developed plot. A lot goes on, but as you watch you see how it all fits together. Definitely worth a watch.

American Gangster reminded me yet again what a versatile actor Russel Crowe is… plus it's pretty clever how Ridley Scott makes viewers love the bad guy and dislike the good guy only to turn that around by the end of the movie.
