He lives at home with his mother (MARCIA JEAN KURTZ), spending his off hours calling in to local sports-radio station 760 The Zone, where he rants in support of his beloved team, often against his mysterious on-air rival, Eagles fan Philadelphia Phil (MICHAEL RAPAPORT). His family berates him for doing nothing with his life, but they don't understand the depth of his love of the Giants or the responsibility his fandom carries. One night, Paul and his best friend Sal (KEVIN CORRIGAN) spot Giants star linebacker Quantrell Bishop (JONATHAN HAMM) at a gas station in their neighborhood. They impulsively follow his limo into Manhattan, to a strip club, where they hang in the background, agog at their hero. Paul cautiously decides to approach him, stepping into the rarefied air of football stardom -- and things do not go as planned. The fallout of this chance encounter brings Paul's world crashing down around him as his family, the team, the media and the authorities engage in a tug of war over Paul, testing his allegiances and calling into question everything he believes in. The bank’s about to foreclose; his father wants to burn the place down, but hasn’t paid the insurance; and Elliot is still figuring how to come out to his parents. When Elliot hears that a neighboring town has pulled the permit on a hippie music festival, he calls the producers, thinking he could drum up some much-needed business for the motel. Three weeks later, half a million people are on their way to his neighbor’s farm in White Lake, NY, and Elliot finds himself swept up in a generation-defining experience that would change his life, and American culture, forever.

Adventureland Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Adventureland Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Adventureland

Greg Mottola, the acclaimed director of Superbad, continues his trend of working with teens of curly-haired awkwardness and matures his body of work with Adventureland, a trip down memory lane with bright characters that turns out to be a much more charming feature than expected. However, there's something missing in Adventureland and that something happens to be a sufficient amount of genuine humor.

After having to cancel his dream vacation due to lack of money, James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) is forced to work as a carny at Adventureland, an amusement park with enough rigged games and corrupt rides to get the owners some serious jail time. And god forbid someone wins a giant-ass panda. Here James meets the girl of his dreams (Kristin Stewart); this happens to turn his summer of drab into the best time of his life.

Capturing the main essentials for '80s nostalgia and preparing those who disliked Superbad for a more grown-up approach, Mottola has reestablished himself as a young filmmaker whose work, beyond any doubt, appeals to both adults and teens. For that, my I tip my hat. Still, Mottola's second major at bat fails to hit a home run and simply hits a long fly-out to deep center. It's well worth a look, but doesn't manage to be as memorable, nor as funny, as it aspires to be. One thing Adventureland does do is make way for Jesse Eisenberg, a rising star whose fresh inelegance will indeed provide a fine line of roles in his unfolding career.

Greg Mottola, just barely taking off and never quite landing in the desired zone, has a keen sense of direction here and gives audiences a sympathetic, inoffensive, and sweet-natured look at the life of teens during the summertime blues and examines what helps shape them as individuals.

It's obvious the director wanted to do something completely different from his previous objectionable and insulting piece known as Superbad. This he succeeds in doing so with vibrant characters and a secondary risque attitude. Adventureland is indeed a step in the right direction and I deeply admire him for that. Hopefully Mottola's next project will also have a more favorable outcome.

Included in the unrated bonus features are deleted scenes that were suitably cut from the movie, "Just My Life: The Making of Adventureland," which explains where the idea for the movie came from, interviews with the cast and crew, and why capturing the '80s feel was so desired, and feature commentary with Mottola and actor Jesse Eisenberg. 3/5 stars

Numb Movie Review by Derek_fleek

Numb Movie Review by derek_fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Numb

”Numb” stars Mathew Perry, Mary Steenburgen, Kevin Pollak, and Lynn Collins. It’s written and directed by Harris Goldberg (Deuce Bigalo: Male Gigolo, The Master Of Disguise).
After multiple puffs of marijuana possibly triggers a rare illness, Hudson Milbank (Mathew Perry) has the problem of distinguishing reality from the illusive. This illness is known as depersonalization disorder. He is referred to multiple therapists, but nothing seems to make him feel at least close to being okay except the woman of his dreams.
After witnessing the horribly indited trailer, I wasn’t too anticipated about seeing it. However, the script was astonishingly honest, intelligent and funny. Mathew Perry gives a phenomenal performance as a man on the verge of a nervous breakdown. The awkward tone present is equivalent to Hudson’s illness, giving you true profundity on how this character feels. Some might think that the quirks embraced by each therapist Hudson encounters are exaggerated. Don’t confuse this with fabrication. This is dead-on portrait of reality and a stunning look at how one man tries to cope with a confusing illness.
Writer and Director Harris Goldberg shows off his intelligent side after writing a series of silly and mindless comedies including the poorly judged 2004 comedy “Without a Paddle”. Lynn Collins and Mathew Perry have great chemistry together and the characters are very likable, even if each have their own defects (Who doesn’t?). What stands out the most is Mathew Perry’s candid act and the incisively written script that actually demonstrate truth. It’s delightful, tragic, insightful, and originally funny in its own dark and twisted way. I want nothing other than for everyone to see this film.
Every laugh is unexpected and the approach is an awkward, yet appropriate one considering the lifestyle this contrite character unwillingly lives. An overlooked gem that most should acknowledge for its peerless story and fitful performance by Mathew Perry. Something dark yet so beautiful in its own willful way. Something new. 4.5/5 stars

Obsessed Movie Review by derek_fleek

Obsessed Movie Review by derek_fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Obsessed

A story similar to Fatal Attraction but of inferior quality, Obsessed is lifted by an admirable performances by Idris Elba and Ali Larter but weighed down by a substandard performance by Beyonce Knowles, whose appearance is to obviously promote her looks and singing career. Given the rehashed formula, director Steve Shill does the best with what's given and proves that even a boiled down, heavy-handed premise can be worth a one-time viewing.
Successful financial advisor and happily married man Derek Charles (Idris Elba) is drawn into a nightmare when his new temp Lisa (Ali Larter) gets it into her head that they are meant for each other. Disregarding the fact that Derek is married, Lisa does all that she can to destroy his career and his blissful life by destroying the relationship he has with his beautiful wife and child. Soon he realizes that it not that easy to get an obsessed woman out of his life for good.
This psychological thriller possesses a little suspense, a few thrills, and enough cloak and dagger scenarios to keep viewers mildly entertained throughout its runtime of 108 minutes — just enough to be satisfied with its results and not regret it entirely. It's a B-rated guilty pleasure from beginning to end considering that, in retrospect, this is indeed not the best of thrillers and is essentially a remake of the critically acclaimed Fatal Attraction.
The climactic cat-fight scene is strongly lacking in the hair-pulling, clawing, shirt-ripping, and slapping that men are sexually aroused by. However, there is still a certain complexity within this scene that manages to keep us both simultaneously tense and hungry for more.
In the end, the film may be sorely deficient in originality but still sustains enough interest to be watchable. It's not a great film, or even a good one, but a bearable one, which is far more than what is expected.
The special features include sections titled "Playing Together Nicely" which is a summary of the film's meaning and interviews with the cast and crew, "Girl Fight!" which interprets the different views and levels of enjoyment in the climactic fight scene between Beyonce and Larter, and "Dressed To Kill" which probes the many different wardrobe selections and why they were appropriate for each character.
Also included with the DVD is a label to advertise Beyonce's newest album I Am...Sasha Fierce. 2.5/5 stars

The Fourth Kind - new trailer - in theaters November 6

In 1972, a scale of measurement was established for alien encounters. When a UFO is sighted, it is called an encounter of the first kind. When evidence is collected, it is known as an encounter of the second kind. When contact is made with extraterrestrials, it is the third kind. The next level, abduction, is the fourth kind. This encounter has been the most difficult to document...until now. Structured unlike any film before it, The Fourth Kind is a provocative thriller set in modern-day Nome, Alaska, where—mysteriously since the 1960s—a disproportionate number of the population has been reported missing every year. Despite multiple FBI investigations of the region, the truth has never been discovered. Here in this remote region, psychologist Dr. Abigail Tyler (Milla Jovovich) began videotaping sessions with traumatized patients and unwittingly discovered some of the most disturbing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. Using never-before-seen archival footage that is integrated into the film, The Fourth Kind exposes the terrified revelations of multiple witnesses. Their accounts of being visited by alien figures all share disturbingly identical details, the validity of which is investigated throughout the film.

Paul Blart: Mall Cop Movie Review by Jaws5

Paul Blart: Mall Cop Movie Review by Jaws5

Buy the Movie Poster for Paul Blart Mall Cop

Typically, if you see the Happy Madison logo pop up before a movie, it's a guarantee of excessive perversion and washed up celebrity cameos. However, in Paul Blart, Happy Madison decides to go with the family friendly approach and it works, but only to a certain degree.

Blart opens with said character running through the police force obstacle course, and doing pretty darn well too, until he's stopped just short of the finish line by his hypogloxemia (basically he needs sugar or he passes out). We then go to Blart's real life, being a mall cop and gawking at the new wig shop girl. Everything seems to be going normally until Blart's new trainee turns out to be a gang leader of X-games type thugs bent on knocking off the mall's bank. Now Blart must spring into action against all odds to save the day.

I have to admit, Blart does have its funny moments and I have to give kudos to Happy Madison for letting Kevin James work within his element. However, that doesn't mean it works all the time, or even the majority of it. In fact, chances are you have already seen most of the jokes in Paul Blart either from the previews or another movie.

The thing that really killed me about this movie though, is how much Blart's character suffers at the expense of corny jokes. I mean, it's obvious from the movie's opening sequence that Blart is more than capable of being a real police officer. Yet, he gets taken down by an old man in a scooter, runs head on into a glass window, and sticks a Hello Kitty band-aid on a paper cut. Yes, I know it's a comedy and I shouldn't be analyzing it that much but come on...you've got to draw the line somewhere.

For me, Blart is something I wouldn't watch again, but there's definitely worse ways you could spend a couple hours and it's a step in the right direction for Happy Madison Productions.

Solo (Souléymane Sy Savané) is a cheerful 34-year-old taxi driver from Senegal hoping for a better life in America. But when the hard-edged William (Red West), a 70-year-old white Southerner, enters Solo’s cab with an unusual request, this odd couple embarks on a journey that will change them both forever. From acclaimed director Ramin Bahrani comes a powerful story of friendship.

Knocked Up Movie Review

Knocked Up Movie Review by armchaircritic

Buy the Movie Poster for Knocked UP

Knocked Up features Popcornmonsters.com actor of the week Leslie Mann as Debbie. Knocked Up is a romantic comedy. It stars Katherine Heigl (Izzie from "Grey's Anatomy"), and Seth Rogen. It follows the formula of the pregnancy comedy, and reminds me of the film Nine Months.
From the title, it's not that much of a leap to infer the plot. Heigl plays Alison Scott, a young women who is suddenly on the up and up in her broadcasting career at an "Entertainment Tonight" style show. When she learns she is going on camera the next day for the first time, she and her sister decide to celebrate by having a drink at the local clubbing hot spot. Soon, the two are loosened up under the influence, and they meet Ben Stone (Rogen). If Ben's mission in life is to do nothing, then he is wildly successful. We learn later that he and some buddies basically do nothing under the guise of building a web site (after fourteen months they only have an "under construction" sign up on their URL). Their other activities could be euphemized as "recreational pharmaceutical consumption," better known as pothead in 60's slang. Alison, intoxicated, invites Ben home, and a few weeks later figures out that she's pregnant, after clearing a shelf of home pregnancy kits from the local pharmacy (seriously, they're pretty accurate, so if you get the plus on the first test, it's time to see the ob/gyn), hence the title.
The predictable rest follows suit. Alison has to find Ben, who she knows very little about. Will she want to be with him? Will he want to own up to his responsibility? Yeah, it's mostly been done before, but not this week so it had some entertainment value.
There were some humorous scenes including when Alison deals with the issue of her pregnancy at her job, or Ben's discourse on how he supports himself at the forever frathouse. As someone who has caught a few babies back in the day, and was delivered by "the new partner" himself, I found the sections that dealt with the finding of the obstetrician and the discussions at the delivery to be the most funny. I will admit that I've seen quite a few woman throw their natural childbirth plan right out the window once the contractions started, and take out the pain on their OB.
So, what's wrong with this film? It's too darn long. I viewed the uncut DVD, which weighed in at 2:15. I can't recall another comedy being that long, and it implies to me that at least a half an hour (if not even more) needed to be on the cutting room floor. Director Garry Marshall understands that sometimes scenes need to be sacrificed to maintain the pace of the story, but that wasn't done here so the pace is v-e-r-y s-l-o-w. Even more astonishing is that there were even more deleted scenes on the DVD! This film needed a healthy dose of nip & tuck. I get that Ben and his friends are a bunch of slackers, but by the third scene of them sitting on the sofa pontificating on life, the universe, and every other nonsense it's just overkill, and doesn't advance anything.
All right, let's come to a final verdict. Knocked Up is a decent comedy in serious need of a tighter edit. The acting is reasonably good, and the plot is predictable, but there is some decent humor. It's good enough for a DVD rental, and viewing once. Just don't think you have to own it.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Movie Review

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Movie Review by derek_fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford features Popcornmonsters.com actor of the week Sam Rockwell as Charley Ford. “The Assassination of Jessie James by the Coward Robert Ford” stars Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Rockwell, Paul Schneider, Jeremy Renner, and Sam Shepard. It’s written and directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper) and based on a novel written by Ron Hansen.
Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) is a 19 year old who has idolized Jessie James (Brad Pitt) since he was a child. Wanted by law for train robberies and the murder of many innocent people, Robert Ford shoots him in order to gain fame and get the reward for his death. This is the story of the assassination of Jessie James.
This is spectacular film. Everything is well shot and the performances first-rate. The cinematography was remarkable and it was brilliantly narrated by Hugh Ross, who has a gripping voice. Both shocking and startling at times, the whole experience was unbelievably gripping from start to finish. Featuring very strong direction by Ron Hansen, who digs deep and find the true essence of filmmaking with this beautiful film. This has everything, from style to an intelligently written script.
It is slowly paced, but the film doesn’t feel drawn out. This is certainly one of the years very best films with some moments that are sure to catch you off-guard. Most of the credit goes to Brad Pitt for portraying a character who makes every scene tense and nerve wrecking. For creating an unpredictable and ruthless killing machine with a soft core. A man with a split personality. This is what acting is all about. Casey Affleck gives a more lively performance than usual, which was acknowledged by the Academy.
Easily earning my recommendation, this is a most amazing film with some sleek, not-to-be-missed performances that will have your eyes wide open. Brad Pitt delivers the goods, swinging from one mood to another, always catching you by surprise. With some stunning camera work and one of the years best performances by Brad Pitt as the cold hearted outlaw Jessie James, this is clearly a must-see movie event.
