Funny People, Aliens in the Attic, and The Collector

Three new movies are out this weekend: Adam Sandler, something for the kids, and some suspense. Look for other great movie reviews on Popcornmonsters.com.

Watch the trailer for Funny People

Over the past few years, writer/director Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up) has shown that nothing—not even losing your virginity or the miracle of childbirth—is sacred. About his third film behind the camera, he says, “I’m trying to make a very serious movie that is twice as funny as my other movies. Wish me luck!” Apatow directs Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Leslie Mann in Funny People, the story of a famous comedian who has a near-death experience.

Watch the trailer for Aliens in the Attic

Kids on a family vacation must fight off an attack by knee-high alien invaders with world-destroying ambitions -- while the youngsters' parents remain clueless about the battle.

Watch the trailer for The Collector

Handyman and ex-con Arkin aims to repay a debt to his ex-wife by robbing his new employer's country home. Unfortunately for Arkin, a far worse enemy has already laid claim to the property - and the family. As the seconds tick down to midnight, Arkin becomes a reluctant hero trapped by a masked "Collector" in a maze of lethal invention - the Spanish Inquisition as imagined by Rube Goldberg - while trying to rescue the very family he came to rob.

House Movie Review by derek_fleek

House Movie Review by derek_fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for House.

House was scheduled to be released in 2007 by Fox Faith, a division of 20th Century Fox. However the movie's release date was pushed back for whatever reason and it arrived in limited release on November 7, 2008. It would be more appropriate to air House on the SyFy (formerly SciFi) Channel, rather than suckering a small sum of money from the few people who want to watch what ought to be a refreshing slasher flick, you know, something other than another dull addition to the Saw series.
In the film, two couples in Alabama find themselves victims of a strange accident, leaving them with no car and no phone. Resorting to the only reasonable idea (find a nearby house and call for help), the couples come upon a house occupied by a group of strangers who claim to have been victims of a similar accident. After staying for a discomforting dinner, they soon realize that the strangers in the house worship the devil and are planning a sacrifice.
Unfortunately, the slasher genre has run dry the past few years without a single refreshing horror idol since Freddy was born in '84, leaving House's villian, The Tin Man, to be a trifling footnote to the slasher genre.
House, complete with wretched acting and the lowest grade of camera work to date, is easily the worst horror movie of '08. Attempts to add another slasher icon to the numerous counts of slice-and-dice maniacs are becoming nonsensical. This routine is getting old quickly and if we keep paying to see bad slasher movies like this one, they'll keep making them.
Provided with a cast of virtually unknown actors who are lost in their roles and a veteran actor (Michael Madsen) who sorely disappoints on every level possible, House doesn't just vanish hope for nearly all modern day slasher flicks, but the horror genre itself is becoming a questionable choice when approaching the ticket booth. It's films like this that leave fans of the genre iffy about paying to see another madman pick off likely teenagers one by one.
Lacking the campy feel required to sustain a guilty pleasure level of interest, nor maintain the ability to be a suspenseful or effective horror film, House is given nothing useful and, in return, the audience is given a forgettable, cheap, and predictable way to blow their money. 1/5 stars

Carnival of Souls Movie Review by Derek_fleek

Carnival of Souls Movie Review by derek_fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Carnival of Souls.

The low-budget horror film Carnival of Souls is quite possibly the worst of the cult classics of the '60s, memorable only for its headache-inducing organ music and the vacant stares and blank expressions of actress Candace Hilligoss. This, of course, makes it fodder for the folks at RiffTrax.
Unfortunately, this RiffTrax arrangement may be the worst of the collection of RiffTrax DVDs. RiffTrax DVDs provide a running commentary by the folks from Mystery Science Theater 3000, a TV show that gained cult status based on its wacky characters and surefire laughs. However, the commentary here is mostly annoying, consisting primarily of timid jokes and sarcastic remarks.
Maybe it's because I had enough of Mystery Science Theater 3000 when it was aired on TV, or maybe it's because jokes rarely hit the mark. Whatever it may be, the RiffTrax commentary is becoming work to sit through and pinpointing a solid joke is becoming more difficult then ever.
Filled to the brim with all-around ineffective performances and an uneventful script, this so-bad-it's-awful film features loads of screen time being wasted on empty scenery and unnecessary traveling. It finds itself knee-deep in the kiddie end of the horror pool, absent of scares and calling attention to a tedious pace that only drags on as the film proceeds.
After a traumatic accident leaves her rattled and confused, Mary Henry (Hilligoss) is haunted by the inability to communicate with those around her and is stalked by a creepy man. Drawn to an abandoned carnival in Utah, Mary begins to question her own sanity after seeing a psychiatrist and encountering some strange visions.
Not aging as well as some seem to think, it takes myriad stabs at creating an eerie atmosphere and disappoints. Neither scary nor impressive, the film features dialog that has no crucial importance whatsoever, wasting time you will never get back. And if you're like me, you'll more than likely regret having sat through the entire film.
It’s a failed attempt at making a ’60s ghost story scary by making the ordinary less... ordinary. It’s a boring and outdated film, critically lacking in direction and acting. Overrated by the majority of the public and hailed by critics as an original spook story, a more realistic description of Carnival of Souls would be empty, deplete, and hollow to the core.

Confessions of a Shopaholic Movie Review by derek_fleek

Confessions of a Shopaholic Movie Review by derek_fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Confessions of a Shopaholic.

If you can relate to the formulaic plot, it is possible to be entertained by an overzealous redhead on a shopping spree, maxing out her many credit cards, and attending Shopaholics Anonymous meetings. Unfortunately this relativity doesn't apply to those who hate shopping. Based on the best-selling novels Confessions of a Shopaholic and Shopaholic Takes on Manhattan by Sophie Kinsella, Confessions of a Shopaholic has a targeted audience, and if you don't fall into said category you won't find much of anything in Confessions of a Shopaholic funny or entertaining.
After her shopping addiction lands her knee deep in credit card debt, college graduate Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) unintentionally lands a job as a journalist for a money management magazine in New York City, which helps support her shopping habit. She becomes famous for her article "The Girl in the Green Scarf." In the process, she falls for the boss (Hugh Dancy).
Directed by P.J. Hogan (My Best Friend's Wedding), Confessions of a Shopaholic is an undisguised chick flick with a meandering plot, a cast of overactors, a messy script, and even includes feeble messages scrambled in among the fashion show of appalling clothing and distasteful shoes. You get the jest from the start. It's a one-note, one-tone premise and doesn't accomplish anything aside from a smirk or two.
Producer Jerry Bruckheimer takes his first stab at producing this type of movie, rendering a glimmer of hope for men who are looking for some sort of Bruckheimer-esque elements. This glimpse fades just moments into the film, when that optimistic sliver of hope becomes shadowed by the flamboyant characters and the awful Gwen Stefani ringtone. The urge to watch something like Die Hard or The Warriors emerges after sitting through the cute and innocent spectrum of Confessions of a Shopaholic.
The cast is well assembled, if the goal was to find a neurotic and intolerable redhead as the lead with a countess who "speaks product." All said and done, it could be worse, but not by much. Maybe if you have a taste for shopping and fashion accessories it's worth a look, otherwise it might be hard to find anything worthwhile in this preppy and tiresome chick flick.
Included in the special features of Confessions of a Shopaholic are deleted scenes (two of which are amusing), "Bloopers of a Shopaholic" which is rather poorly assembled, and a "Stuck With Each Other" music video By Shontelle featuring Akon. 1/5 stars

Big Fan Movie Review by star757 - coming to theaters 8/28

Big Fan Movie Review by star757

Buy the Movie Poster for Big FAn. Watch for it coming to select theaters August 28!

This movie stars Patton Oswalt as Paul from Staten Island. It is a look at a true sports fan and what he'll go through for his team. It is funny, and yet you feel sorry for the pathetic guy whose life revolves around his football team. Paul is a parking garage attendant who loves the NY Giants. He listens to the local sports talk radio station and is always calling with comebacks to his nemesis Philadephia Phil. Paul is 30 something, lives with his mom, is never as good as his siblings, and tailgates on the weekend with his friend while watching the game from the parking lot. One day fates collide and Paul and his friend spot their favorite player, Quantrell Bishop, in Staten Island. They decide to follow him, and a few hours later end up at a club in NYC. When he finally sums up the courage to approach his idol, things go wrong. When he learns they were following him Quantrell beats Paul to a pulp. Will this change how he feels about the game of football? The rest of the movie follows Paul's depression as his team suffers from the loss of Quantrell, who is inactive because of the beating. Will Paul press charges? You have to watch the movie to find out. This movie is somewhat funny. I didn't feel sympathy for Paul. It was sad that he cared more about his football team than his own well-being. This is what makes it funny because he is so ridiculous in his love for the Giants. Watch for it in theaters if you're looking for a sports movie about a truly committed fan.

Once upon a time, Buck Howard (John Malkovich) spent his days in the limelight. His mind-boggling feats as a mentalist extraordinaire – not to be confused with those of a mere magician - earned him a marquee act in Vegas and 61 appearances on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. In his own humble opinion, his talents go far beyond simple sleight of hand – he can read minds and hypnotize not just a single soul but an entire room of people! But nowadays, it’s clear to everyone but Buck that his act has lost its luster; he performs in faded community centers and hasn’t sold out a theater in years. Yet, with a hearty handshake and a trademark “I love this town!” Buck Howard perseveres, confident in his own celebrity, convinced his comeback is imminent. He just needs a new road manager and personal assistant. As it turns out, recent law school drop-out and unemployed, would-be writer Troy Gable (Colin Hanks) needs a job and a purpose. Working for the pompous, has-been mentalist fills the former requirement, but how it satisfies the latter is questionable, especially to his father (Tom Hanks), who still assumes Troy is in law school. Nonetheless, with the aid of a fiery publicist (Emily Blunt) and a bold stroke of fate, Buck surprisingly lands back into the American consciousness, taking Troy along for the ride of his life. As the coveted spotlight again shines on the great Buck Howard, Buck becomes the unlikeliest of teachers as Troy learns a few tricks he couldn’t possibly have picked up in law school.

Brothers Trailer, out December 4, 2009

BROTHERS tells the powerful story of two siblings, thirty-something Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are polar opposites. A Marine about to embark on his fourth tour of duty, Sam is a steadfast family man married to his high school sweetheart, the aptly named Grace (Natalie Portman), with whom he has two young daughters. Tommy, his charismatic younger brother, is a drifter just out of jail who’s always gotten by on wit and charm. When his Black Hawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains Sam is presumed dead and the Cahill family suddenly faces a shocking void. Tommy tries to fill in for his brother by assuming newfound responsibility for himself, Grace, and the children. In the grief and strangeness of their new lives, Grace and Tommy are naturally drawn together. Their longstanding frostiness dissolves, but both are frightened and ashamed of the mutual attraction that has replaced it. But Sam is not dead; he and a fellow soldier have been captured by Taliban fighters. In Afghanistan’s harsh, remote Pamir Mountains, Sam is subjected to traumas that threaten to rob him of his very humanity. At the same time that Sam’s sense of self is being destroyed overseas, Tommy’s self-image is strengthening at home. When Sam unexpectedly returns to the States, a nervous mood settles over the family. Sam, uncharacteristically withdrawn and volatile, grows suspicious of his brother and his wife. Their familiar roles now nearly reversed, Sam and Tommy end up facing the ultimate physical and mental challenge when they confront each other. In the shifting family dynamics, who will dominate? Directed by six-time Oscar® nominee Jim Sheridan (IN AMERICA, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER), BROTHERS tells the compelling tale of how two brothers come to terms with issues of love, loyalty, and manhood—and with the woman caught between them.

Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn't counted on Romilda Vane's chocolates! And then there's Hermione, simmering with jealousy but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Movie Review

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Movie Review by nathada

Buy the Movie Poster for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban features Popcornmonsters.com actor of the week Daniel Radcilffe as Hogwarts School wizard student Harry Potter. Harry Potter(Daniel Radcliffe) starts his third year with his two best friends Ron Weasley(Rupert Grint)and Hermione Granger(Emma Watson). They hear about a loose prisoner Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) who is after Harry. This year is much darker and scarier then the first two with Sirius Black loose and the Azkaban guards dementors who make you see and hear your worst memory and they can suck out your and leave you as a empty shell they call it the kiss. Harry has help to make the dementors go away from his new defense against the dark arts teacher Professor Lupin (David Thewis). Harry also finds out things from his past in which he did not know.
Harry actually wants to hurt Black even kill him. There are also new creatures in this film and just as much humor with the same cast apart from Dumbledore who is played by Micheal Gambon who takes over the late Richard Harris. This film is also more emotional as well as scarier than the first two films. So I think this is the best film so far and can't wait to see how they do the other books. So go see this now!
I like this film because they stayed mostly to the book and plus it's my favorite out of the books. Also this one keeps away from the kiddish kind of film and goes much darker for teens and adults. There are also new characters in this one and the films get funnier as they go on and the new director made the film have a different feel. In this one you can tell they have grown from the first two and have become teenagers. I think the only thing I disliked in the film was the bit when they went in to the shrieking shack because they don't explain everything but they probably didn't have enough time. I still like this film much better although some people don't. I would recommend you to go to see this in the cinema.

In 1958, as part of the dedication ceremony for a new elementary school, a group of students is asked to draw pictures to be stored in a time capsule. But one mysterious girl fills her sheet of paper with rows of apparently random numbers instead. Fifty years later, a new generation of students examines the capsule's contents and the girl's cryptic message ends up in the hands of young Caleb Koestler. But it is Caleb's father, professor John Koestler, who makes the startling discovery that the encoded message predicts with pinpoint accuracy the dates, death tolls and coordinates of every major disaster of the past 50 years. As John further unravels the document's chilling secrets, he realizes the document foretells three additional events -- the last of which hints at destruction on a global scale and seems to somehow involve John and his son. When John's attempts to alert the authorities fall on deaf ears, he takes it upon himself to try to prevent more destruction from taking place. With the reluctant help of Diana Wayland and Abby Wayland, the daughter and granddaughter of the now-deceased author of the prophecies, John's increasingly desperate efforts take him on a heart-pounding race against time until he finds himself facing the ultimate disaster -- and the ultimate sacrifice.

The Division, a shadowy government agency, is genetically transforming citizens into an army of psychic warriors--and brutally disposing of those unwilling to participate. Nick Gant, a second-generation telekinetic or "mover," has been in hiding since the Division murdered his father more than a decade earlier. He has found sanctuary in densely populated Hong Kong--the last safe place on earth for fugitive psychics like him--but only if he can keep his gift a secret. Nick is forced out of hiding when Cassie Holmes, a 13-year-old clairvoyant or "watcher," seeks his help in finding Kira, an escaped "pusher" who may hold the key to ending the Division's program. Pushers possess the most dangerous of all psychic powers: the ability to influence others' actions by implanting thoughts in their minds. But Cassie's presence soon attracts the attention of the Division's human bloodhounds, forcing Nick and Cassie to flee for their lives. With the help of a team of rogue psychics, the unlikely duo traverses the seedy underbelly of the city, trying to stay one step ahead of the authorities as they search for Kira. But they find themselves square in the crosshairs of Division Agent Henry Carver, a pusher who will stop at nothing to keep them from achieving their goal.

Casey Beldon hated her mother for abandoning her as a child. But when inexplicable events begin to happen, Casey begins to understand why she left. With the help of Sendak, her best friend Romy and boyfriend Mark, Casey uncovers the source of a family curse dating back to Nazi Germany--a creature with the ability to inhabit anyone or anything that is getting stronger with each possession. With the curse unleashed, her only chance at survival is to shut a doorway from beyond our world that has been pried open by someone who was never born.

SHRINK * New Music Video "HERE" by Jackson Browne...in Theaters July 24th

What happens when the people we count on to hold us together…are barely holding it together themselves? Jonas Pate's Shrink is a striking, fast-paced exposé of the “other” Hollywood, featuring folks living outside their comfort zone and the people who put them there. Henry Carter (Kevin Spacey) is a psychiatrist with an A-list clientele, including a once-famous actress (Saffron Burrows), an insecure young writer (Mark Webber), and a comically obsessive-compulsive superagent (Dallas Roberts). Henry is not in a good place, however. He has been asked to take his first pro bono case, a troubled teenage girl from a neighborhood far from the Hollywood hills. Considering his present state of mind, is he ready for the real-life troubles of a young woman who loves the world of movies he has become so jaded by? At its core, Shrink is a study of control and our endless need for it, even when it grows increasingly impossible to obtain. Writer Thomas Moffett uses classic archetypes in this modern Hollywood tale, but never pushes them over the edge of credibility. Performed by a well-matched cast at the top of their form, the result is both satisfying and exhilarating. Watching Shrink makes us feel like voyeurs looking through a window into the lives of people who look great, feel worse, and end up behaving badly.

There are actors and then there are ACTORS. Sacha Baron Cohen is one of those ACTORS. His style has always seemed to include fully committing himself to the role of the character he has decided to take on, really showing his dedication to his work. First he gave us Ali G., a satirical character displaying the stereotype of a non-black British suburban male who consumes himself in black and Jamaican culture through hip-hop and reggae. Ali’s job description included interviewing various public figures in the UK, shocking them with his street image and his deeply stereotypical view of the world.

Then came our beloved Borat Sagdiyev, a popular Kazakh journalist traveling through the United States recording real-life situations on the behalf of the fictitious Kazakh Ministry of Information. The majority of the film features unscripted scenes of Borat interviewing and interacting with Americans, who truly believe he is a foreigner with little or no understanding of American customs, and they go out of their way to teach him their customs. He in return goes out of his way to further stereotype the image of a foreigner.

Now comes Brüno, a flamboyant Austrian fashionista who decides to take his show across the water to the USA. Similar to Ali and Borat, Brüno is also a reporter. However his niche includes fashion, entertainment, celebrities, and homosexuality. His interviews get funnier depending on how much of a prejudiced person the interviewee is, for the extremists he presents them with an over the top stereotype persona of a homosexual irking prejudice responses from them. I for one cannot wait to see the film, Sacha has been awesome in his acting, whether it be his own characters on TV and his feature films, or if its an assigned character in a movie such as his Talladega Nights’ Jean Girard, a homosexual NASCAR champion. It won’t be long, a month flies by in the summer we’ll all be rushing in once the film is released, I would in no way be surprised if this movie does well in the box office. Want to know what you are in for this Friday? Go to iReel to watch movies online and to check out the official trailer for Bruno.

Weather Girl movie review...coming to theaters July 10!

Weather Girl Movie Review by star757

Buy the Movie Poster for Weather Girl. Watch for it coming to theaters July 10!

This movie stars unknown actress Tricia O'kelley as the sassy morning weather girl Sylvia. The movie follows her ups and downs as her life unravels at the beginning of the movie. She's 35 has a tv job and is living with the morning news show anchor. She thought everything was going well until she discovers he's been cheating on her. Then everything falls apart, she breaks down on tv, quits her job and moves in with her younger brother. This movie is a comedy, but it does have a well developed story line. The comedy is light, realistic and fits well in the movie. As the movie goes on you see Sylvia's struggle with relationships and finding a job now that she's known for having a meltdown on tv. The movie was pretty good. The cast is mostly unknown with small parts from Blair Underwood and Mark Harmon as the cheating host Dale. The movie is good in that it feels real, not ridiculous or unbelievable. You just get to see Sylvia, her comedic struggles with life and how it all comes together in the end. I would recommend this movie if you're looking for something good, different, and not the same old big budget movie where you can predict every scene before it occurs.
