Official Synopsis

Academy Award-winning writer/director Martin McDonagh takes audiences on a killingly funny trip In Bruges, which is world-premiering as the opening-night film of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

Mr. McDonagh makes his feature directorial debut on the film, from his own original screenplay. His plays (which include The Lieutenant of Inishmore and The Pillowman) have brought him two Olivier Awards and four Tony Award nominations. He wrote and directed Six Shooter, starring Brendan Gleeson, which earned him the 2006 Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short Film.

In Bruges was filmed on location; Bruges (pronounced "broozh"), the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travellers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry (two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes) to go and cool their heels in the storybook Flemish city for a couple of weeks.

Very much out of place amidst the gothic architecture, canals, and cobbled streets, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists. Ray, still haunted by the bloodshed in London, hates the place, while Ken, even as he keeps a fatherly eye on Ray’s often profanely funny exploits, finds his mind and soul being expanded by the beauty and serenity of the city.

But the longer they stay waiting for Harry's call, the more surreal their experience becomes, as they find themselves in weird encounters with locals, tourists, violent medieval art, a dwarf American actor (Jordan Prentice) shooting a European art film, Dutch prostitutes, and a potential romance for Ray in the form of Chloe (Clemence Poesy), who may have some dark secrets of her own.

And when the call from Harry does finally come, Ken and Ray's vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of darkly comic proportions and surprisingly emotional consequences.

from Shout! Factory

The movie thats moving audiences to tears. -Rolling Stone

You'll feel like you're literally seeing the world through [Cobain's] eyes.-Washington Post

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- Not since the late 1960s and early 1970s has there been a musical artist who so completely spoke for an entire generation. After the breakup of the Beatles and the tragic deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin, there were few music icons left of their magnitude - until the meteoric success of Nirvana and their breakthrough Nevermind. Following Kurt Cobain's suicide three years later, Kurt became the icon for Generation X and remains so for today's youth as well.

Timed to coincide with Kurt Cobain's 41st birth anniversary, KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON is an intimate and moving portrait of the late musician and artist Kurt Cobain as told entirely in his own words. The film, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2006, was nominated for a 2007 Independent Spirit Award, was screened at numerous top international film festivals around the world, and will be released on DVD from Shout! Factory on February 19, 2008, the day before Cobains birthday. The DVD also contains a behind-the-scenes featurette and has a suggested retail price of $19.99.

Directed by AJ Schnack, KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON is based on more than 25 hours of previously unheard audio interviews conducted with Cobain by noted music journalist Michael Azerrad for his book Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana.

KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON is a profound, almost dream-like account of Cobains own successes and failures, thoughts and experiences, allowing the audience to gain unprecedented intimacy with this legendary figure.

For this unique film, director AJ Schnack assembled selections from the Azerrad interviews and merged them with newly filmed, evocative imagery of the three cities in Washington state that played a major role in Cobain's life: Aberdeen, Olympia and Seattle. These expressionistic images, combined with a haunting original score by Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Nirvana producer Steve Fisk, as well as the music of 20 artists who influenced or touched Cobain during his life - including Queen, the Melvins, David Bowie and Scratch Acid -- come together to create an extraordinary look at a man who went from impoverished indie rocker to world-famous tabloid figure in less than a year.

In the film, Kurt Cobain recounts his own life – from his childhood and adolescence to his days of musical discovery and later dealings with explosive fame – and offers often piercing insights into his life, music, and times. The conversations featured in the film have never before been made public and reveal a highly personal portrait of an artist much discussed but not particularly well understood.

Sidetrack Films presents a Bonfire Films of America Productions. KURT COBAIN ABOUT A SON is directed and edited by AJ Schnack; producers, Shirley Moyers, Noah Khoshbin, Chris Green; co-producer, Michael Azerrad; executive producer, Ravi Anne; director of photography, Wyatt Troll; music supervisor, Linda Cohen; titles and animations, Tomorrow’s Brightest Minds. The film features the music of Bad Brains, Butthole Surfers, David Bowie, Cheap Trick, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Half Japanese, Iggy Pop, Leadbelly, Mark Lanegan, MDC, Melvins, Mudhoney, Queen, R.E.M, Scratch Acid, Vaselines and Young Marble Giants.

Ocean's Thirteen Movie Review by star757

Ocean's Thirteen Movie Review

Buy the Movie Poster

This movie was like the other Ocean's movies. I thought it was pretty similar to the first because it takes place in a Las Vegas Casino, and Terry Benedict plays a small role in it. It was a good movie, but Ocean's Eleven is so much better. I think it's just too similar to be all that interesting. George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and all the other guys are back for this movie. It starts with Reuben, played by Elliot Gould, getting scammed in a casion deal that he was opening with Bank, played by Al Pacino. He has a heart attack and they don't know if he'll make. The guys want to make it up to him by going after Bank on the grand opening of his new hotel/casino. They have several challenges like the new artificial intelligence security system and how to shut it down, and stealing Bank's diamond necklaces that he bought as all his other hotels won the prestigious 5 diamond award. Also in this movie Ellen Barkin plays Bank's assistant. If you're a Julia Roberts fan she isn't in this movie. I thought it was a good movie, but way to similar to the first one....bringing down a casino owner and taking all his money. The first movie is so much better, but if you liked it you may like this one too.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets Movie Review

National Treasure: Book of Secrets Movie Review by star757

Buy the Movie Poster

I really enjoyed this movie. I just saw it in the theater and thought it was a lot of fun. The whole concept is pretty similar to the first National Treasure movie, but I think it works. All the actors are back: Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight, and the addition of Hellen Mirren as Cage's mother. Nicolas Cage plays Benjamin Franklin Gates a treasure hunter who's great grandfather's reputation is about to be destroyed. His great grandfather helped save a large treasure from being discovered by John Wilkes Boothe on the night he assassinated Lincoln. A man named Wilkinson, played by Ed Harris, comes forward with a missing piece of Boothe's diary that he says shows Gates was actually a co-conspirator, not a hero. This is the basis for the whole movie as Gates and his friends set out to restore his great grandfather's reputation. In the diary they find a code that may lead them to the City of Gold, a ancient hidden native American treasure. The movie goes from Washington, D.C., Paris, London, Mt. Vernon, the White House, Library of Congress, and Mt. Rushmore. Along the way we see the relationship between Gates' parents as they haven't spoken in 32 years. Also, Gates and Abigail, played by Diane Kruger, have been dating, but are now broken up. We get to see how these relationships work out. Again we see Gates' sidekick Riley Poole, played by Justin Bartha. I thought it was a great movie. Yes, it has a similar idea to the first movie, but still it's a lot of fun. It's a great action, adventure movie. I did think the first movie was a little more exciting. And, watch for the end...do you think there will be another one? I liked it and if you enjoyed the first National Treausre movie, you'll love this one too.

3:10 to Yuma Movie Review by star757

3:10 to Yuma Movie Review

Buy the Movie Poster

This movie was good up until the end. I must say that I did not like the ending at all, and for me that ruined the whole movie. That may give a little bit away, but it is important. This movie is a western that stars Christian Bale and Russell Crowe. Christian Bale is a rancher living in Arizona just barely making it and trying to keep his family afloat. He has a wife played by Gretchen Mol and two sons. Bale was wounded in the Civil War and his he owes money on his farm. The movie opens with his barn being burned because he owes money. Then Bale and his sons come across outlaw Ben Wade, played by Crowe, and his gang robbing a Pinkerton stage coach full of money. Wade ends up getting captured in town. Although he doesn't really seem to care. Bale, wanting to make money offers to help transport the outlaw to the town of Contention in order to catch the 3:10 prison train to Yuma. The movie follows their travel through Indian territory, a railway camp, and outrunning Wade's gang, determined to free him. The movie is basically about the two characters. How Crowe plays the tough outlaw that cares about no one but himself, or does he. And Bale plays the down and out rancher who has to prove to his family that he is still a strong man, even though he has a bad leg and their ranch is going to be lost. The movie was ok, but I thought the story could have gone deeper and more background could have been given. I did not like the ending, and for me that ruined the movie.

Defending your life Movie Review by star757

Defending your Life Movie Review

This movie stars Albert Brooks as Daniel, a man who recently died. The movie opens with him receiving a CD player and Cd's as gift at work. He then goes to get his new BMW equipped with a CD player. Well, as he's reaching for some CD's his car collides with a bus. This movie is about what happens after his death. He is sent to Judgment City. This is where you go after death and you must defend your life. Each person is given an attorney and a prosecuter. Everything is pleasant in Judgement City. The weather is nice, you can eat as much as you like without worry, you can even see who you were in past lives. Everyone spends a few days on "trial". Here they view scenes from their life and the judges decide if you are ready to move forward, or go back to Earth to become smarter and face your fears. On Earth people use 3-5% of their brains, in Judgement City they use about 45%. Albert Brooks' defense is not going so well when he meets Julia. She is also defending her life, but is probably going to move on. They fall in love in the few short days they have, but will it last? Will Brooks' character move on or have to return to Earth? What about Julia? This is a good movie, and I would recommend watching it.

Life before her eyes

Just released news about the Movie Life Before her eyes

Coming out on April 18, staring Uma Thurman and Evan Rachel Wood, Life before her eyes, probes the life of a surburban wife who seems to have everything.

Synopsis: Based on the best-selling novel by Laura Kasischke, Life Before Her Eyes is a dramatic thriller about Diana (Oscar-nominee Uma Thurman), a suburban wife and mother who begins to question her seemingly perfect life--and perhaps her sanity--on the 15th anniversary of a tragic high school shooting that took the life of her best friend. In flashbacks, Diana is a vibrant high schooler (played by Evan Rachel Wood of THIRTEEN and THE UPSIDE OF ANGER) who, with her shy best friend Maureen, plot typical teenage strategies--cutting class, fantasizing about boys--and vow to leave their sleepy suburb at the first opportunity. The older Diana, however, is haunted by the increasingly strained relationship she had with Maureen as day of the school shooting approached. These memories disrupt the idyllic life she's now leading with her professor husband Paul and their young daughter Emma. As older Diana's life begins to unravel and younger Diana gets closer and closer to the fatal day, a deeper mystery slowly unravels.

Letters from Iwo Jima Movie Review

Letters from Iwo Jima movie review by star757

This movie was about the Battle of Iwo Jima during WWII, as told from the Japanese side. It is a pretty long movie and all subtitles, so be prepared for that. For a war movie I found it to be pretty calming. The subject is war, but the way they portrayed it was with muted colors and simple music. I thought it was interesting because it gives you the perspective of different Japanese soldiers. One is a newly married young man who has no desire to be in the war. He sees Iwo Jima as a waste of time and something they should just give to Americans. Most of the men around him say it's all about honor and it's the best thing you can do to die for the emperor. When they are losing the battle most even find it better to commit suicide than be killed or captured by the enemy. A new general comes to the island who has spent time in the U.S. He believes in fighting to the end, not dying before the enemy gets you. There is also an interesting character in one of the Japanese officers that was an Olympic horseback riding champion. Throughout the movie we hear the letters that these men are writing back home, although it seems they will never make it there. Also, there are flashbacks to their lives leading up to their involvement in Iwo Jima. All in all, it is an interesting portrayal of the battle from the Japanese point of view. Most of them just believed that Americans were barbaric and inhuman, but in the end they are all very similar men fighting the war.

Cloverfield Movie Review by Armchair critic

The giant monster movie hits Manhattan with Cloverfield, the horror flick produced by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias) and director Matt Reeves. This movie doesn't break new ground but does deliver plenty of scares and a few nervous chuckles along the way.

The movie, told entirely from the point-of-view of a handheld video camera, opens with a going-away party for Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David), who's heading to Japan to start a new job. Rob's brother Jason (Mike Vogel) and Jason's girlfriend Lily (Jessica Lucas) are in their Manhattan apartment to wish him well, and Jason quickly passes on the video camera on to Hud (T.J. Miller), Rob's "best bud." Hud is obsessed with the pretty and brooding Marlena (Lizzy Caplan) and the drama comes when Beth (Odette Yustmas), who Rob has a crush on, comes with a date and leaves after she and Rob have a fight. Then there's what feels like an earthquake, several buildings explode, and the Statue of Liberty's head comes flying down the street. And glimpses of a giant creature make everyone panic.

During the evacuation over the Brooklyn Bridge, Rob gets a cell phone message from Beth that she's injured, dying and scared -- so he decides to head back to rescue her, and he's joined by Hud (still filming) and his friends. So these friends head against the tide of people fleeing the city in search of Beth. Unfortunately chaos reigns, there's the ever-present danger from the giant monster (and numerous smaller spider-like critters), and the friends start dying off at a fairly quick rate.

Cloverfield is mostly horror fluff -- pretty damn downbeat horror fluff -- that's done well. The actors do a decent enough job, but their role in the movie consists almost entirely of screaming, running, crying, then running some more. There are plenty of scary moments, and the decision to show only part of the creature until the movie's end keeps the level of suspense high. The friends' quest takes them from soldier-filled streets of Manhattan to abandoned sunway tunnels to a nerve-wracking trip from a standing apartment building over to the one that collapsed against it. The handheld camera technique gives a feeling of immediacy to the action (though folks who felt nauseous from the camerawork of The Blair Witch Project won't fare well at all here) and its light and night-vision options come into play at critical scenes in the movie. There's no grand message or overall theme, but Cloverfield provides an entertaining afternoon with some high-quality scares.

Overall grade: B+

Cloverfield Review by C-M

Cloverfield Movie Review by member C-M

This review will be written in two parts. The first is my feature review. The second part will be personal thoughts of the ending. Some people seemed to be put off by the ending. My hope is that my review will get you interested in seeing the movie with the knowledge that if you were left hanging, you can come back here and see my points to ponder which have lead me to love the entire movie. Beware that the second point will contain spoilers...and more than just spoilers...complete giveaways. But again, this is done to add to your overall enjoyment of the film.

PART 1 ----

The film mainly starts with a going away party. One of the important members of the group of friends is moving to Japan to accept a Vice President role with a company. All friends/acquaintances are present to wish Rob luck. The entire film is shot by handheld camera which was used to record all of Rob's testimonials wishing him luck in Japan.

Suddenly the world around them shudders and the news report gives some basic descriptions of what's going on during what they initially believe to be an earthquake. They all run to the roof to find out what they can see from up there. But the situation rapidly escalates and they realize that something very big and wrong is going on.

After having the head of the Statue of Liberty launched at them and the Empire State Building collapsing and covering the world around them in dust and disaster. At this point police and military forced try to usher civilians across the bridges and out of the city. After a call from Rob's love interest about her desperate situation Rob and his group of friends head back across the bridge to rescue her.

Now, as previously stated the film is shot entirely from the handheld camcorder carried by Rob's best friend throughout the entire adventure. This gives you some unprecedented first-hand experience that haven't been offered in any possibly similar film. You are right there. You feel that everything that happens to the characters is happening to you. The tense situations. The often humorous reaction by one of the friends in the group. And the following disasters.

The most impressive footage in my opinion would be when they're running through the streets with rockets whizzing closely overhead, smashing into buildings all around them with the creature destroying buildings just to their side. The special effects were amazing and the fact that everything was happening with a handheld camera being in the middle of the action instead of a third-person perspective where everything is happening in front of the camera's lens.

This was a harrowing, exciting adventure which had my adrenaline going. And I swear that at one point in the tunnel where the group was discussing going their own ways and they all said "yes" that they were going on...in the heat of the moment, I was nodding my head. It was by far a more interactive cinematic experience I've had in those regards.

Part 2---- SPOILERS-----I warned you----

I could hear grumbling and complaints from some of the people around me. They didn't want to ponder the ending. They wanted everything spelled out A-B-C to them. And personally I applaud the ending because it made me think.

Some seemed flustered that things were left unanswered. 1) did anyone from the group survive? Most likely not. A couple members' demise may not have been certain but we'd have to assume that they didn't make it. 2) Was the creature eliminated? That is almost definite. The fact that the camera was buried under so much debris it would have taken a serious cleanup effort to get to the camera and recover the film that was shot. The text at the very beginning tells you that the footage belongs to the US Department of Defense and refers to the area formerly known as Central Park where footage ends. So this would have most likely been done during a massive cleanup effort like that of 9/11 but on an even larger scale. What was the creature? Some likened him to Godzilla. Well much of the ""attack" could make you consider the creature to be Godzilla. But in looks, the insectoid creatures that it dropped I would have to say that it wasn't the fabled Godzilla. You'd have to agree that it came from the sea since the first victims were the tanker and the Statue of Liberty out in the bay. Some people seem to be put off the most because there wasn't a concise explanation. But I personally believe that one wasn't necessary. It came, caused massive destruction, probably killed millions of people and then was killed itself.

I believe that more than enough clues were provided throughout the entire movie and didn't need to be summed up in a clean package at the end. Was it sad that most, if not all, of the people that we spent time getting to know throughout the movie didn't make it? Of course it was. But again isn't that what happens in life? This movie was just ONE of the MILLIONS of stories that there would have been about that night/day. Some would have made it across the bridge and outside the blast zone and survived with an amazing albeit sad story.

I hope that maybe this helped some of you enjoy the film even more. But the actual cinema experience boiled down to me feeling the adrenaline rushes along with the characters. I quickly came to like and feel for the characters. I was drawn in immediately. And I just hope that everyone can get the same level of enjoyment from it that I did.

When you mix in a story of a Navy pilot shot down during the Vietnamese War, and his harrowing plan of escape, I would think that this was my kind of film. Unfortunately, Rescue Dawn is rather lackluster, and doesn't add up to the sum of its parts.

Christian Bale plays Dieter Dengler, a German born man that had the dream of flight. After spending years in the US Air Force peeling potatoes, he goes to college living out of a Volkswagen (Digression: hey, it was the 60's, but that still doesn't explain the guy who did this for in medical school that I knew.), and reenlists in the Navy. Dengler than becomes a Navy flier. He pilots the A-1 Skyraider from the USS Ranger (seriously, they were using propeller planes during 'Nam). On his inaugural mission over enemy territory Dengler gets shot down just over the Laotian border. Rescue Dawn chronicles his subsequent capture, torture, and escape.

So what's wrong with the film? The acting is merely average, but that is not what truly sinks it. Also, the scenery and setting seem to do the story justice. The screenplay simply obscures the amazing story of the principal character. I read the Wikipedia entry on Dengler, and it is a lot more fascinating than the film itself. The way the film progresses, sure we can't detail the entire guy's life, but Dengler hardly is portrayed as the hero that he was. Somehow, he seems too lackluster, and not a resilient guy that consistently bounces back from the knocks that life hands him.

Anyway, while the film is not terrible, I seriously think that it could have been a whole lot better. Breeze by Rescue Dawn, there's plenty of better movies out there.

Sweeney Todd Movie Review by armchaircritic

Sweeney Todd Movie Review

If you thought the movie musical needs more gore and gloom, your perfect movie has arrived! Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street has leaped from the theater to the big screen, and star Johnny Depp and director Tim Burton work their magic to create another dark tale.

Sweeney Todd begins like a typical revenge story. A flashback shows Benjamin Barker (Depp) living an idyllic life in London with his wife Lucy (Laura Michelle Kelley) and baby girl Johanna, until the corrupt and degenerate Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) had Parker arrested and deported to get to Lucy. Fifteen years later Barker returns as Sweeney Todd, appearing as a gothic apparition -- pale skin, wild black hair with a white streak, dark circles under his eyes -- and learning that Lucy poisoned herself after Turpin raped her and Johanna (Jayne Wisener) is the ward of Turpin.

Todd goes mad and gets even. He joins forces with a fellow gothic dweller of the slums, the darkly cheerful Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), whose claim to make "the worst pies in London" is hard to dispute. Todd finds his silver-handled razor blades and repoens his barber shop, hoping to get his enemies in the chair for a little slicing and dicing. Todd isn't too picky about his victims, as he puts his belief that everyone deserves to die to practice. Mrs. Lovett is a very happy accomplice, finding a most nauseating means of disposing of the bodies.

There is a subplot where young sailor Anthony (Jamie Campbell Bower), the young sailor who rescued Todd from the ocean, falls in love with Johanna and wants to rescue and marry her.. There's also the young boy Toby (Ed Sanders) is informally adopted by Mrs. Lovett after his abusive employer, the preening, pompous barner Signor Aldolfo Pirelli (Sascha Baron Cohen), is dispatched by Todd. But the focus of Sweeney Todd is the dark quest of Todd to get his revenge on the evil Judge Turpin -- and more or less anyone else he meets.

The music here is as cheerful as the film is dark. Rather than slow gloomy dirges, Sweeney Todd features grim songs with a quick tempo and frequent dark humor (such as when Todd sings a love song about his daughter while slitting throats). Director Tim Burton gets the most from his excellent cast, resulting in energy and mania through the grizzly proceedings. There are no heroes here -- Todd will kill just about anyone, and the romantics Anthony and Johanna seem naively optimistic against the dark backdrop of London -- but for gallows humor, Sweeney Todd delivers. You won't feel hopeful at the end of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street -- but you will feel entertained.

Transformers Review by LeoRuby

Transformers Movie Reviews

This was a good movie. When it first came out I really had no desire to see it, I didn't care about the transformers. I had heard that it was a good movie and so we rented it. It is packed with action. It's a pretty long movie, 1 hr and 23 min, but it keeps moving the whole time. If you like action packed movies and special effects you will love it. The transformers come to Earth in search of the "cube". It is an energy source that creates life. Megatron, the head of the evil decepticons, wants to find it and take over Earth's technology and get rid of the humans. The good autobots are led by Optimus Prime. Each transformer is a car, truck, plane, etc. that transformers into a huge robot with special abilities. The movie begins at an air force base in the middle east that comes under attack by some huge machine. A few survivors are left who contact the gov't. and try to stop the transformer. The machine has somehow hacked into military computers and taken all the information it could. From here the movie turns to high school student Sam out to get his first car. The car, a transformer named Bumblebee, really chooses him. Eventually Sam meets all the transformers and learns of the cube and how they hope to save the world. Optimus Prime wants no humans hurt, only to stop Megatron from obtaining the cube. Sam has a tie to Megatron in that his great-grandfather discovered him while exploring the arctic circle many years before. Megatron was frozen in the ice and Sam's grandfather activated something on him that produced a laser and imprinted the map of the cube's location onto his glasses. Sam now owns these glasses and is trying to sell them on ebay. That is how the transformers find him. From here it's just action packed. There is a subplot with some computer experts trying to trace the source that has hacked into the military computers to steal all their information. A lot goes on in the movie, but it is not hard to follow. I would recommend this movie if you're looking for a good, fun action movie. It's funny at parts, has a good story and keeps you watching the whole time.

Unlimited Movie Streaming on NetFlix

Netflix, Inc. If you have not heard the great news by Netflix, then you are in for a treat. Due to the possible emergence of a movie streaming site by Apple, Netflix has decided to give all customers who enroll in any plan above $4.99 unlimited streaming movies. Currently Netflix offer about 6,000 instant streaming movies. I just ordered the $8.99 monthly plan, which gives you 1 movie a month and unlimited streaming. As I use the computer frequently, I thought this was an unbelievable deals. Right now you won't find the newest movies streaming, but hopefully it will change in a couple months. I watched Brooklyn Rules tonight and was really impressed with the quality of the stream. There was absolutely no lag and picture quality was excellent. There are alot of tv series like Hero's and The Office complete seasons which is a nice feature if you need to catch up on a couple episodes. Netflix, Inc.

Brooklyn Rules Review

Brooklyn Rules Movie Review

I thought this was a good movie. It's about three best friends that come from Brooklyn in the 80's. The movie begins when they are kids and find a man killed in his car near the beach, a victim of a mob hit. Michael takes his gun, Carmine his lighter, and Bobby his puppy in the backseat. These items will play their own parts in the movie. Freddie Prinze Jr. plays Michael the main character. He goes to Columbia, wants to be a lawyer and is trying to make it out of Brooklyn. Carmine wants to join the mob and befriends mob boss Caesar played by Alec Baldwin. Bobby is just the nice guy who prays every time he passes a church and is waiting to propose to his girlfriend of two years. Living in Brooklyn is violent at times with the mob. Some scenes are pretty gross, like an ear being cut off. But overall the movie is not too violent. I like it because it had a good story...seeing the three friends and if they would stay friends as they got older and took different paths. The movie takes place over a year of their lives. Will Michael make it to law school? Will Carmine survive the mob? Will he join or listen to his friends? What will happen to Bobby? Will he propose to his girlfriend? In the middle of this Michael meets Ellen played by Mena Suvari. She's a smart girl who comes from Connecticut and a very different world than Michael's. How can they love each other if they come from opposite backgrounds? Their relationship is only looked at on the surface. The main story is the friendship between Michael, Carmine, and Bobby. Can it survive or are they growing apart? The undercurrent throughout the movie is the mob. I thought this was a pretty good movie. Worth a watch. I would recommend it if you're looking for something new to see.

Knights of the South Bronx Review by Armchaircritic

Knights of the South Bronx Review by Armchaircritic I'm always up for a "stand up and cheer" film, and Knights of the South Bronx is a gem. It features veteran Ted Danson, and Keke Palmer. The story is somewhat formulaic I can fully admit, not unlike Freedom Writers, Take the Lead or The Ron Clark Story. You know, bunch of troubled youths in the inner city Bronx at the local school. An eager teacher shows up, in Danson portraying Richard, an out of work exec who is substitute teaching for some cash to keep his family in the manner to which they've grown accustomed. The key is that Richard is this closet chess champ that the kids discover when he plays fourteen games simultaneously in an exhibition and wins them all at the local park. You can probably guess the rest. The kids learn that chess can be a great equalizer, in that it's only based on intellect, and not that they're poor or minorities, or anything else. While the kids focus on chess playing, at least they're focusing on something, and their math and reading scores follow, although the school's principal, and plenty of the parents don't quite get it. Before we can say "checkmate," the children decide to compete in a local tournament. While they initially get mopped on the board, soon they have some success under the tutelage of their teacher (even though most of the other schools have dedicated chess coaches). This all leads to the national chess tournament where... I won't tell you, but you can probably guess who comes home with the trophy. It is based on a true story. Knights of the South Bronx did hold my attention, and I did enjoy the film. I was particularly intrigued by Darwin, a five year old that got stuck learning chess because his kindergarten class ended early and would go to his sister's class because no one else was at home. It was particularly touching at the end when they showed the number of children that had graduated, and moved on to colleges (some went to my alma mater), much of which could be attributed to their involvement with chess. That school's trophy case was stuffed! Perhaps I just have a soft spot for this type of film because back in third grade, I had a teacher that was really into chess, and had the whole class playing, but then again, he was a bit progressive as he would put on magic shows, and showed film strips (remember those?) about Bigfoot, UFO's and the Loch Ness monster. This experience made the next grade all the more painful when the most progressive thing we did was to look up words in a dictionary, and even with the largest one they sold at Waldenbooks, I still couldn't find half of them! Anyway, if you want a little inspiration, then Knights of the South Bronx is worth seeking out. The Waitress Review by Armchaircritic

The Waitress Review by Armchaircritic Keri Russell stars as Jenna in Waitress, an indie film about life, struggle, and the persistent will to change one's life for the better. It also features Nathan Fillon, Cheryl Hines and Andy Griffith. Jenna is a waitress in the local diner. Her job is dead end, and she gets yelled at by her boss hourly along with her fellow employees, even though she is also the resident pie maestro. Her husband, Earl (Jeremy Sisto), is the proverbial jerk who mentally and physically abuses her, is constantly suspicious, and takes her money. The conflict comes when Jenna discovers she is pregnant, and will have the child even though she openly states that she doesn't want it. She makes preparations to leave her life behind, and also to compete in a pie baking contest. Her obstetrician, Dr. Pomatter (Nathan Fillon) provides a welcome outlet to her miserable life, and what starts innocently rapidly progresses to an extramarital affair. Along the way, veteran actor Andy Griffith portrays Old Joe, the diner owner, who gravitates between cantankerous old timer and wise oldster. Overall, while the plot of Waitress is a downer, the acting is strong. However, the characters have the depth of a tidal pool- at low tide. The waitresses are just too stereotypical in their dialogue, and you wonder if folks in this situation could really be that simple. I think that this film had more potential but it is an acceptable movie to view for some more serious drama. The Kingdom review by ajazfiazuddin

The Kingdom Movie Review

Do not rent "The Kingdom" if you are looking for a PBS documentary about the clash of civilizations or the middle east crisis or any other such deep analysis. This is an action movie, pure simple. It does not aim to be particularly intelligent, thoughtful, or politically correct. Definitely not politically correct. The plot, which simply revolves around an "under the table" FBI investigation of a bombing at an American housing complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, makes no bones about portraying the local Muslims as either blood thirsty extremist civilians or "suck-up" royal family members looking for every Kodak moment they can. The only exception is one Saudi cop who teams with the FBI agents, including Agent Flurry (Jamie Foxx) to catch the perps behind the bombing. He wants to protect his country and its people as vehemently as Jamie Foxx, and in that cause they are united. After all, the bombing cost the lives of 47 of his Saudi colleagues too. Perhaps the only important and honest message the movie does successfully convey is that the victims of Jihadist terrorism vary and are often themselves Muslim. So go ahead and rent it ... because effects and action wise, its a good film. Just don't expect to earn a PHd in international studies while watching it.

The Hunting Party DVD

Thanks to the generosity of Weinstein Company and Genius Products, I received two copies of The Hunting Party on DVD. This movie is coming out on January 22 and might be one you might be interested in renting. Also I put a copy in the prize catalog, so review a couple movies and you will receive it on DVD. Below is a Popcornmonsters.com Member review star757

The Hunting Party Review

This was a good movie I thought. It has an interesting plot. Richard Gere plays Simon Hunt, a journalist traveling the globe and reporting in the middle of wars, along with his cameraman, Duck. He's in the middle of all the action at the beginning of the movie until something happens and he breaks down on air. He loses his job and floats around until his partner Duck doesn't even hear from him anymore. Meanwhile Duck is promoted to a cushy studio job in NYC. Five years later Duck, the anchorman, and a new journalist (the VP's son) arrive in Bosnia to cover the five year anniversary of the end of the war there. This is where Duck and Simon last worked together. Simon happens to be there and reunites with Duck in an effort to get Duck to help him chase one more lead. He knows where the hated war criminal, the "Wolf", is hiding. If only they can somehow find him, although no one else has been able to. Simon wants to interview him and then capture him for the $5 million reward. He convinces Duck and his young journalist friend joins in to. It ends up being a crazy ride as they travel the Bosnian/Serbian countryside in search of this crazed and hated war criminal. Will they survive? Will they capture him or will he capture them? How will they find them? And what secret in Simon's past makes him so hungry to chase the wolf? Watch to find out. I thought this was a good movie, maybe not the best, but it was an interesting story.
