Brooklyn Rules Review

Brooklyn Rules Movie Review

I thought this was a good movie. It's about three best friends that come from Brooklyn in the 80's. The movie begins when they are kids and find a man killed in his car near the beach, a victim of a mob hit. Michael takes his gun, Carmine his lighter, and Bobby his puppy in the backseat. These items will play their own parts in the movie. Freddie Prinze Jr. plays Michael the main character. He goes to Columbia, wants to be a lawyer and is trying to make it out of Brooklyn. Carmine wants to join the mob and befriends mob boss Caesar played by Alec Baldwin. Bobby is just the nice guy who prays every time he passes a church and is waiting to propose to his girlfriend of two years. Living in Brooklyn is violent at times with the mob. Some scenes are pretty gross, like an ear being cut off. But overall the movie is not too violent. I like it because it had a good story...seeing the three friends and if they would stay friends as they got older and took different paths. The movie takes place over a year of their lives. Will Michael make it to law school? Will Carmine survive the mob? Will he join or listen to his friends? What will happen to Bobby? Will he propose to his girlfriend? In the middle of this Michael meets Ellen played by Mena Suvari. She's a smart girl who comes from Connecticut and a very different world than Michael's. How can they love each other if they come from opposite backgrounds? Their relationship is only looked at on the surface. The main story is the friendship between Michael, Carmine, and Bobby. Can it survive or are they growing apart? The undercurrent throughout the movie is the mob. I thought this was a pretty good movie. Worth a watch. I would recommend it if you're looking for something new to see.
