Hotel Rwanda Review by Armchaircritic
Hotel Rwanda Review
Hotel Rwanda is a powerful historical drama about the civil war in the titled country back in April of 1994. It stars Don Cheadle, Nick Nolte and Sophie Okonedo. The plot focuses around Cheadle's character, Paul Rusesabagina. Paul is the manager of the Hotel des Mille Collines in Kigali, Rwanda catering to the elite of Rwandan society. A civil war breaks out between the Hutu and the Tutsi groups that ultimately results in 800,000 deaths. In the middle of the chaos, Paul's hotel becomes a refuge for over one thousand. They use the hotel's resources, including the cash in the safe, and the liquor stores to bribe military officials into leaving the refugee camp alone. The UN peacekeeping detachment, ably led by Nolte that plays Colonel Oliver is portrayed as ineffective, and only concerned with evacuating citizens of other nations out of Rwanda. This contributed to the mass genocide that occurred. Hotel Rwanda is inspirational showing one man's courage and persistence to do some good amidst so much tragedy. It is shot well, and has a good pace. My only criticism is that on the DVD there are no subtitles, and at times the African accents are a little difficult to decipher, so they would have helped. If you haven't rented it yet, it's well worth seeking out. The Million Dollar Hotel Review by LeoRuby
The Million Dollar Hotel Review
I rented this movie because it had Mel Gibson in it, so I thought it would be halfway decent. Well, it wasn't...and I'm not the best at judging a good movie from its cover. This movie is all over the place at the beginning. If you're not paying attention you'll get lost as to who all the strange characters are and probably just turn the movie off. It stars Mel Gibson as a detective who comes to the L.A. "Million Dollar Hotel" to investigate a murder. The hotel is a rundown place with many odd people who live there. Their is a man who thinks he's Geronimo, a girl who hardly talks to anyone and walks around barefoot, and a guy who's a little slow, but everyone loves. There are also many other characters. Mel Gibson is trying to find who pushed one of the residents from the roof, but none of the residents seem a likely suspect. It's basically an odd movie, not very interesting, and not even that compelling to watch. You don't feel drawn into it wondering who did it. Mostly you're just trying to figure out who all these odd characters are and how they go together. I would not recommend this one. Maybe if you're a die hard Mel Gibson fan, but even then it's not that great. It definitely wasn't one of the worst, but also not too good.Friday, December 28, 2007
The Nanny Diaries
The Nanny Diaries Review
The Nanny Diaries is a look at the high society of Manhattan's upper East Side. Starring Scarlett Johansson, and Laura Linney, it is an adaptation of the book of the same name. The book was written by Emma McLaughlin, and Nicola Kraus, both of whom worked as nannies to subsidize the cost of their NYU education. In the film, Johansson plays Annie Braddock, a recently graduated business major with a minor in anthropology that has been pushed by her mother to go into corporate America. After "choking" on her Goldman Sachs interview, she decides to take it down a notch, have a rest, and becomes a nanny for the summer. While the money is initially good, the child's mother, known only as Mrs. X (Linney), and the child, Grayer, torture her to the point that she just can't take it anymore. While over time she bonds with the child, an episode that occurs with Mr. X serves as the catalyst for a new direction in Braddock's career direction. The Nanny Diaries is cleverly told. There is a shell story of an anthropologist going undercover to study NYC's elite, complete with the dioramas at the Museum of Natural History depicting fathers golfing, and mothers shopping. There is also plenty of anthropology lingo, such as field guide entries, and "going native." Underneath this however, is some significant social commentary. Unfortunately, many of these nannies are exploited people that are cheap labor to Manhattan's richest. They get little to no time off, and sometimes are not even paid the agreed upon wages. Also disturbing is that the parents of these children, as exemplified by the father, Mr. X in the film, have no interest in parenting. They have children to fulfill a social obligation, but have no interest in raising a family- clearly a sad social commentary. On a simpler level, The Nanny Diaries is the story of Annie Braddock, and her first job. Along the lines of The Devil Wears Prada, she is given task after task, which turn into a series of tests whether she will break or not- all with little or no reward. At the end of the film, they even short change her out of her pay! Overall, I liked The Nanny Diaries quite well. It was well paced, well acted, and the screenplay was well done. If you missed it in theaters this summer, catch it on video, and don't miss the interview with the book authors in the bonus features. The Simpsons Movie Review
I just received the Simpsons DVD for Christmas and was excited to see it. I had heard that it was so funny and that I just had to see it. Let me start by saying, I have not been a big fan of the Simpsons in recent years. I think there first 5 or so years were there best, and have been going down hill lately. Well this movie was just like watching an episode, some funny moments but not worth going to the theater to see. They could have just as easily showed this as 4 continued episodes on free tv. The drawings were exactly the same as a normal episode, no cgi or update for the big screen. Lets get to the basic of the movie. While sitting in church Grandpa Simpson has a prophesy that only Marge takes seriously. As the pieces of the prophecy start to fall in place, Marge gets worried. Lisa goes around trying to get Springfield to clean up there pollution and finally gets the town to pitch in. Homer and Bart are well, Homer and Bart. After everything is cleaned up Homer dumps Spider pig waste into the river. Spider pig is Homers pet pig that provides some good laughs. The EPA and President Schwartzeneger have to step in and stop Springfield from polluting the entire county. A dome is placed over Springfield and everyone wants to go after Homer, as he is responsible. The Head of the EPA overcome with power does everything to destroy Springfield and not let anyone else know about what happened. You will have to watch it to know the rest. If you are a huge Simpsons fan you will love it, if you are not you will think its an ok movie. I was not really impressed.Thursday, December 27, 2007
The Simpsons Movie Review by Star757
Simpsons Movie Review
This movie was ok. That's all there really is to it. If you still love watching the Simpsons, then you will probably love this movie. There are some funny parts. I finally saw where Spider Pig and Harry Plopper came from. This movie is about the polluted lake in Springfield that Lisa is determined to clean up. Finally the town agrees, but just after it is cleaned someone dumps stuff in it again. Can you guess who? Well, the town becomes the most polluted in the history of the world and Cargill the head of the EPA and President Schwarzenegger must decide what to do about it. The movie is ok, but I don't think it's the funniest thing ever. Again, if you love the Simpsons then this is for you.Secrets of Egypt: Lost Queen
Secrets of Egypt: Lost Queen Review
This was an interesting documentary about the lost queen of Egypt, Hatshepsut. Actually she was king, since she ruled as Pharaoh. The documentary takes place in Egypt as they hunt for her mummy. The circumstances surrounding her death and rule in Egypt are suspicious. The show follows several historians, archaeologists, and Egyptologists as they hunt for clues as to why she was killed and all references to her removed from Egyptian history. I found this movie very interesting as they hunt for clues; it's a good mystery. They have several mummies and they use many kinds of technology to determine which one was Hatshepsut. It's amazing the kind of things they can do today. Also, there are other people looking for clues as to why she was removed from Egyptian monuments and how she really died. If you like history, Egypt, mummies and mysteries, you will enjoy this documentary.Wednesday, December 26, 2007
Happy Feet Movie Review by armchaircritic
Happy Feet Movie Review
While Happy Feet starts off like The March of the Penguins, it goes on to a more global view of the birds that live on the frozen continent. While it uses quite a few stars for the voices, Robin Williams was the only one that stood out. The plot starts as a young penguin named Mumble can't "find his voice." While his singing is painful, he makes up for it in his dancing (hence the film's title). When he doesn't fit in with his flock, a series of adventures ensue. The rest of the film then revolves around two unrelated themes that I think were competing at times: it's ok to be different, and man destroying the environment. For a not so serious animal musical, one theme would have been plenty. In Happy Feet, the real star is the computer animation. Traditionally, ice and water have been challenges to animators, with their complicated surfaces and shadows. This film does an excellent job with both. The scene with the killer whales was very realistically done, although it would have too much realism for very small children as the hungry mouths keep snapping at the penguins. While several of the musical numbers dragged on way longer than needed to advance the plot, I still enjoyed Happy Feet. For those looking to "chill out," it showcases the state of the art in animation. armchaircritic Reviews Interpreter, The (5/10)
It was with great anticipation that I viewed The Interpreter. The cast includes Nicole Kidman, and Sean Penn. The story centers around Kidman's character, who functions as an interpreter at the UN, and hears a little more that she should. what follows is a series of plot turns and twists. Several other reviewers gave it high marks. This should have been a good movie, but it was definitely not....
