Transformers movie Review by Leoruby

Transformers Movie Review by leoruby

Buy the Movie Poster for Transformers

Transformers features Popcornmonsters.com actor of the week Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky. This was a good movie. When it first came out I really had no desire to see it, I didn't care about the transformers. I had heard that it was a good movie and so we rented it. It is packed with action. It's a pretty long movie, 1 hr and 23 min, but it keeps moving the whole time. If you like action packed movies and special effects you will love it. The transformers come to Earth in search of the "cube". It is an energy source that creates life. Megatron, the head of the evil decepticons, wants to find it and take over Earth's technology and get rid of the humans. The good autobots are led by Optimus Prime. Each transformer is a car, truck, plane, etc. that transformers into a huge robot with special abilities. The movie begins at an air force base in the middle east that comes under attack by some huge machine. A few survivors are left who contact the gov't. and try to stop the transformer. The machine has somehow hacked into military computers and taken all the information it could. From here the movie turns to high school student Sam out to get his first car. The car, a transformer named Bumblebee, really chooses him. Eventually Sam meets all the transformers and learns of the cube and how they hope to save the world. Optimus Prime wants no humans hurt, only to stop Megatron from obtaining the cube. Sam has a tie to Megatron in that his great-grandfather discovered him while exploring the arctic circle many years before. Megatron was frozen in the ice and Sam's grandfather activated something on him that produced a laser and imprinted the map of the cube's location onto his glasses. Sam now owns these glasses and is trying to sell them on ebay. That is how the transformers find him. From here it's just action packed. There is a subplot with some computer experts trying to trace the source that has hacked into the military computers to steal all their information. A lot goes on in the movie, but it is not hard to follow. I would recommend this movie if you're looking for a good, fun action movie. It's funny at parts, has a good story and keeps you watching the whole time.

Sam Witwicky again joins with the Autobots against their sworn enemies, the Decepticons.

After their daughter is stricken with leukemia, a couple conceives a younger sister who can provide a donor match, but the family is torn apart when, after years of medical procedures, the healthy younger sibling sues her parents for the right to decide how her body is used.

In the summer of 2004, Sergeant J.T. Sanborn and Specialist Owen Eldridge of Bravo Company are at the volatile center of the war, part of a small counterforce specifically trained to handle the homemade bombs, or Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), that account for more than half of American hostile deaths and have killed thousands of Iraqis. A high-pressure, high-stakes assignment, the job leaves no room for mistakes, as they learn when they lose their team leader on a mission. When Staff Sergeant William James takes over the team, Sanborn and Eldridge are shocked by what seems like his reckless disregard for military protocol and basic safety measures. And yet, in the fog of war, appearances are never reliable for long. Is James really a swaggering cowboy who lives for peak experiences and the moments when the margin of error is zero - or is he a consummate professional who has honed his esoteric craft to high-wire precision? As the fiery chaos of Baghdad swirls around them, the men struggle to understand and contain their new leader long enough for them to make it home. They have only 38 days left in their tour of Iraq, but with each new mission comes another deadly encounter, and as James blurs the line between bravery and bravado, it seems only a matter of time before disaster will strike.

Premonition movie review featuring Sandra Bullock

Premonition Movie Review by armchaircritic

Buy the Movie Poster for Premonition

Premonition features Popcornmonsters.com actor of the week Sandra Bullock as widow Linda Hanson. I've had the Premonition disc sitting around for months, and simply didn't get around to watching it. After I did, I was glad that I finally got to it.
Sandra Bullock plays Linda Hanson, a suburban housewife with a husband and two young daughters. Her life is pretty much average, until one day she awakens to the reality that her husband is dead. However, she keeps getting premonitions (hence the title) of other adverse events that are going to happen affecting herself and family. As the tale gets told, in a series of nonconsecutive days of the week, we learn about marital difficulties with her husband, her relationship with her mother, the daughter's accident that she can't remember, and a psychiatrist that thinks she's psychotic works on getting her committed.
Premonition reminded me of another film that runs out of order, Memento. In that film, the story is told backwards to simulate the memory disorder where the main character has no short term memory. In Premonition, we're a lot more jumbled as there's no true order, but characters and subplots keep getting revealed in bite size pieces for easy digestion. While it sounds like it is very confusing, I'd say that it's only mildly so, and makes us identify with our protagonists unsettling feeling of each time she wakes up to start a new day, she's not sure if her husband is alive or dead.
Overall, I enjoyed Premonition. It's an interesting drama, that attempts to break new ground in the sequence of storytelling. Also, don't miss the DVD's featurette that shows the story sequence chronologically after you see the film to get some insight on how the whole thing fits together.
Overall Grade: B+

OSCAR WINNER SAM MENDES’ NEAL STREET PRODUCTIONS IN 2-YEAR FIRST-LOOK DEAL AT FOCUS FEATURES

NEW YORK, June 18, 2009 – Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes’ production company Neal Street Productions, in which he is partnered with Pippa Harris and Caro Newling, has signed a two-year first-look deal with Focus Features. Focus will hold worldwide rights to any features that Neal Street produces. Focus CEO James Schamus made the announcement today.
Mr. Mendes’ new movie Away We Go was released by Focus this month, and last weekend broke into the national boxoffice Top 20 while playing on only 45 screens; its per-screen average of $12,463 is the highest of any film in the Top 20. The picture will open in additional cities and theaters throughout the month. Directed by Mr. Mendes from an original screenplay by Dave Eggers & Vendela Vida, Away We Go stars John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph. Away We Go was produced by Edward Saxon, Marc Turtletaub, and Peter Saraf; Mari Jo Winkler-Ioffreda and Ms. Harris were the film’s executive producers.
Focus president of production John Lyons and senior vice president, international production Teresa Moneo will work on the Neal Street films. Among the projects in development by Neal Street at Focus are:
Butcher’s Crossing, an adaptation of the classic 1960 novel written by John Williams and described by The New York Times Book Review as “perhaps the first and best revisionist Western.” Gabe and Alan Polsky of Polsky Films are producing with Neal Street. The epic adventure set in 1870s America follows Will Andrews as he forsakes his Harvard education and lands in the small Kansas town of Butcher’s Crossing, where he is drawn into a sweeping hunt for one of the last great buffalo herds. No screenwriter is yet assigned to the project.
Middlemarch, an adaptation of George Eliot’s classic novel of the same name, which explores diverse lives and changing fortunes in a provincial 1830s English community. Screenwriter Andrew Davies has written the current draft.
Mr. Schamus commented, “After our extraordinary experience on Away We Go, we knew we would work together again with Sam. The range of Sam’s interests and skills as a filmmaker is limitless, and he is a magnet for top talent in front of and behind the camera.”
Mr. Mendes said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be in partnership with Focus. I have long been a huge admirer of what they do, and my experience of working with James Schamus, John Lyons and the Focus team on Away We Go has been nothing but enjoyable. I know I speak for both myself and Pippa Harris when I say that we can’t wait to make some more movies with them, and soon.”
Founded in 2003 by Sam Mendes, Caro Newling, and Pippa Harris, Neal Street Productions has enjoyed a string of screen successes, including Revolutionary Road, Starter For Ten, Jarhead, Things We Lost in the Fire, and Away We Go. Neal Street is also prolific in the theater world, having recently received a total of 15 Tony nominations for Shrek The Musical and Mary Stuart. Neal Street Theatricals is currently represented on the London stage by Mr. Mendes’ Bridge Project – a double bill of The Winter’s Tale and The Cherry Orchard at The Old Vic. Ms. Newling comes to Neal Street from London’s Donmar Warehouse; Ms. Harris hails from the BBC, where she was Head of Drama Commissioning.

Man of the Year Movie Review by star757

Buy the Movie Poster for Man of the Year

This was a pretty good movie. At the beginning I thought it would be just like any other movie about the long shot running for president, but it was a bit different. This is part comedy with some suspense mixed in. I didn't find Robin Williams humor extremely funny. There weren't tons of jokes, but if you like him you'd probably like the movie. Robin Williams, Christopher Walken, and Laura Linney starred. Laura Linney did a good job as an employee of the company that developed new digital voting machines. She finds a flaw in the system...is it rigged?..computer error?..will it get fixed?..who will be elected president? You will have to watch to find out. The movie follows Robin Williams, as Tom Dobbs, a comedian turned presidential nominee. What does it really take to be the president? This makes a nice, light movie to watch on a Friday or Saturday night spent at home.

Three new comedies out this weekend, June 19!

Here are the new movies to watch this weekend. Look for other great movie reviews on Popcornmonsters.com.

When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she's actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she's tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.

Two men, played by Jack Black and Michael Cera, wander through early civilization in biblical times.

After the failure of his career, his marriage, and his suicide attempt, world-class grouch Boris Yellnikoff, spends his days insulting the small children unfortunate enough to study chess with him and irritating his still-loyal friends with his never-ending tirades about the worthlessness of absolutely everything. A former Columbia Professor and self-proclaimed genius who came close to winning a Nobel Prize for Quantum Mechanics, Boris fancies himself the only one who fully comprehends the meaningless of all human aspirations, and the pitch-black chaos of the universe. As he readily admits, Boris is not a feel-good person.

A great way to watch Popeye on ireel.com

For those of us born in the 80s nothing makes you remember your childhood more than those Saturday morning cartoons we used to watch like Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, the Looney Toons and oh so many more. Sure there are channels like Boomerang that still run these classic TV shows but what about our movies? Well iReel is giving us the option to go back in time and watch our favorites. A recently released film on iReel is Popeye (1980) where Robin Williams brings the animated character to life, albeit a musical it is still a classic. So many more movies can be found in iReel's Family Film section that would flood the memory gates of an 80s child. You should definitely check out the site, you will be surprised by the film selection.

Lonely Hearts movie review by star757

Lonely Hearts Movie Review by star757

Buy the Movie Poster for Lonely Hearts

Lonely Hearts features Popcornmonsters.com actor of the week James Gandolfini as Charles Hilderbrandt. The movie is about a boyfriend and girlfriend, played by Jared Leto & Salma Hayek, who find rich women to swindle and kill. John Travolta plays the detective with family problems who is after them. The movie wasn't too bad, although I don't think I would want to watch it again. It's a little violent at times. This movie is based on the true story of the murder spree of Martha Beck and Raymond Fernandez. They pretend to be brother and sister. He gets the rich woman to love him and then they get her money and kill her. The movie was ok if you like crime, drama, suspense of that type.

The Little Shop of Horrors Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Little Shop of Horrors Movie Review

The infamous crew of Mystery Science Theater 3000 take turns jesting and riffing on the already funny 1960 classic, creating yet another hit-but-mostly-miss comedy routine. Consistently commenting on the off-key music and bad accent of a talking, flesh-eating plant, the crew certainly has a few buoyant jokes that hit the mark with accuracy and precision. Even if there is a long and annoying string of tired puns near the end, this may be the best RiffTrax cycle yet. Edging close to getting fired, Seymour Krelboin has the strong desire to prove to his boss that he is capable of having a green thumb. Working at a run down flower shop owned by Gravis Mushnik, Seymour decides to cross breed a Butterwort and a Venus Flytrap to create something unimaginable: A talking, flesh eating plant that demands more food each day, resulting in a string of random murders. The original Little Shop of Horrors has the cheerful ambition of being likable and fun. And it is, particularly from the large amount of empty-headed antics. The film rattles along with a pleasing rambunctiousness, tossing off its drollery and one-liners and scoring on a remarkably high percentage of them. This 1960 Roger Corman camp classic is largely entertaining, insanely goofy and supremely satisfying. Given the film’s shoestring budget and cheap effects, it basically relies solely on entertaining with its slaphappy characters (including a psychotic dentist, a flesh-eating plant with one too many accents and a flower eating costumer) and screwball comedy, scoring laughs on many different levels. Keep an eye out for a young, yet still morbidly deranged, Jack Nicholson as the man who drastically enjoys going to the dentist more than anything else in the world. Remade into a somewhat disappointing musical in 1986 by critically acclaimed director Frank Oz, this classic tour de force is a silly comedy riddled with more satire than your average spoof movie. And it works remarkably well with a hilarious conclusion. All its shortcomings are forgiven once in tune with its cornball, gag-show of hilarity. Sit back, relax and enjoy one of the silliest films ever made. Movie Rating: 4/5 RiffTrax Commentary Rating: 3.5/5

Night of the Living Dead movie review by derek_fleek

Night of the Living Dead Movie Review by derek_fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for Night of the Living Dead

What is argued by many the most terrifying horror film ever made, occasionally dubbed the greatest film of all time by critics and a personal favorite of mine becomes an utter joke, courtesy of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett of Mystery Science Theater 3000, working under the RiffTrax banner. The gags are timid and not nearly funny enough to hold interest, most of them being misfires with the occasional semi-laugh that rises out of the blue.
A group of strangers trapped in a farm house must fight flesh-eating zombies in hope that a rescue team will find them. Theory is that a satellite returning from Venus was contaminated with radiation that could have the capacity to mutate human beings into zombies. Anyone who dies during this crisis will return as a zombie, including those who get bitten by one.
Largely overacted when reciting dialog and curiously bewildered when silent, Judith O'Dea is lost in her role as Barbra. But this lackluster actress isn't enough to undo the scares that true horror master George A. Romero accomplishes in his directorial debut.
If you listen very carefully, the dialog creates not only an interesting film but also one that stands on its own as to what occurs during misguided fear. Rather than resorting to non-stop gore and jack-in-the-box scares, most of it relies on the viewer’s imagination and ability to picture the occurrences being explained.
Equally combining ambiance with gore, Night of the Living Dead is a groundbreaking horror film. It’s one of those rare films where you can actually feel the fear coating your inner thoughts, rather than being forced down your throat.
Although his latest work hasn’t been the best, George A. Romero has created a film that will be praised for years to come and deserves every blood-drenched bow as a courtesy from horror fans. If you haven’t seen Romero’s directorial debut Night of the Living Dead, you haven’t seen classic horror in its top form.
The tension builds rapidly at a headlong pace leading to a shocking and disturbing conclusion. After four decades, Night of the Living Dead lives up to its hype as the greatest, most frightening horror film ever made. From the hollow sound to the scratchy picture, it all makes for tacky, low-grade perfection. Something the folks of RiffTrax seem to have overlooked, constantly riffing on the sound of a cricket in the background. Maybe these three should find something more reasonable to joke about. The film is great, but the commentary can be rather annoying for lovers of this horror classic.
Movie Rating: 5/5 stars
RiffTrax Commentary Rating: 2/5 stars

New movies out June 12

Here are the new movies to watch this weekend. My pick for an action movie would be The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3. Watch and let us know what you think. Look for other great movie reviews on Popcornmonsters.com.

Evan Danielson is a successful financial executive who has more time for his blackberry than his seven-year-old daughter. When he has a crisis of confidence and his career starts going down the drain, however, he finds the solution to all his problems in his daughter's imaginary world.

New York City subway dispatcher Walter Garber's ordinary day is thrown into chaos by an audacious crime: the hijacking of a subway train. Ryder, a criminal mastermind, leads a highly-armed gang of four, threatening to execute the train's passengers unless a large ransom is paid within one hour. As the tension mounts beneath his feet, Garber employs his vast knowledge of the subway system in a battle to outwit Ryder and save the hostages. But there's one riddle Garber can't solve: even if the thieves get the money, how can they possibly escape?

I t is the near future. Astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon, completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine Earth's primary source of energy, Helium-3. It is a lonely job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Taped messages are all Sam can send and receive. Thankfully, his time on the moon is nearly over, and Sam will be reunited with his wife, Tess, and their three-year-old daughter, Eve, in only a few short weeks. Finally, he will leave the isolation of "Sarang," the moon base that has been his home for so long, and he will finally have someone to talk to beyond "Gerty," the base's well-intentioned, but rather uncomplicated computer. Suddenly, Sam's health starts to deteriorate. Painful headaches, hallucinations and a lack of focus lead to an almost fatal accident on a routine drive on the moon in a lunar rover. While recuperating back at the base (with no memory of how he got there), Sam meets a younger, angrier version of himself, who claims to be there to fulfill the same three year contract Sam started all those years ago. Confined with what appears to be a clone of his earlier self, and with a "support crew" on its way to help put the base back into productive order, Sam is fighting the clock to discover what's going on and where he fits into company plans.

It all adds up to an uproarious battle of the sexes in this new romantic comedy by Brian Herzlinger (My Date with Drew).

Blades of Glory Movie Review

Blades of Glory Movie Review by the armchair critic

Buy the Movie Poster for Blades of Glory

Blades of Glory is the latest Will Ferrell formula sports parody. I think in the end, I'm simply not much of a fan of Ferrell's peculiar brand of comedy.
The film's premise is that Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell), and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder- who I think was dismal in Napoleon Dynamite), both get barred from men's figure skating. From the film's poster, it's not too much of a stretch to figure out what happens next. Yup, the two of them take advantage of some loophole and become an all male couple in pairs skating. Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous, and that's before they head out onto the ice.
The outfits these two wear are seriously deranged, as is much of the dialogue from their mouths as this film progresses. I can't believe some of the lines that are uttered, and not in a good way. Craig T. Nelson plays their coach as he essentially reprises his role from his television series by that name, although this time out it's skating (with practice in a fish freezer no less) and not football. There are also several cameo appearances (maybe that makes it a minor role) of Scott Hamilton playing himself as a sports anchor.
There are a few highlights. When a chase on the streets ensues on ice skates, it was mildly entertaining. Also, the choreography of the final routine, including the infamous "Iron Lotus" did hold my attention. Unfortunately, the rest of it didn't, and as such, I'm going to recommend that unless you are a huge Ferrell fan, I'd leave Blades of Glory on the ice. This is another example of the few decent parts not adding up to a decent film. Then again, Ferrell's latest film, Semi-Pro is following the same formula and due out in February '08 so someone must like this kind of stuff.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts/Los Angeles® (BAFTA/LA) will honor Golden Globe winning and BAFTA nominated actress Emily Blunt with the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year at the 2009 BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards on Thursday, November 5 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel.

“In just a few short years, Emily Blunt has gone from breakout success in My Summer of Love to blockbuster hits like The Devil Wears Prada and the upcoming The Young Victoria and The Wolfman,” says BAFTA/LA Chairman Peter Morris. “Emily continuously demonstrates an impressive range in her performances and with each movie solidifies her status as one of the best actresses of her generation.”

Emily Blunt shot to international prominence with her lead role in the multi award-winning British movie, My Summer of Love, for which she won the Most Promising Newcomer award at the 2004 Evening Standard Film Awards and was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2004 British Independent Film Awards.

Blunt started her career at the 2002 Chichester Festival, where she played Juliet in a production of Romeo and Juliet. She made her West End debut opposite Dame Judi Dench in a production of The Royal Family. Her TV credits include Henry VIII, Death on the Nile, Foyle’s War and the critically-acclaimed Gideon’s Daughter, for which she won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 2007.

In 2006 Blunt starred in The Devil Wears Prada opposite Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. The critics shared the audience’s love for the film as well as for Blunt, calling her performance a “tour de force of smiling hostility”, “scene-stealing” and “a marvel at conveying the terror beneath the hauteur”. Blunt was nominated for a Golden Globe, a BAFTA for Supporting Actress as well as the BAFTA Rising Star Award. She also received nominations in the Breakthrough Female category at the 2006 Teen Choice Awards, and was honored with the Breakthrough Award at the 2006 Movieline Young Hollywood Awards.

Blunt’s other film credits include Charlie Wilson’s War, Wind Chill, The Great Buck Howard, Dan in Real Life, The Jane Austen Book Club, and most recently the box-office hit Sunshine Cleaning, opposite Amy Adams. Emily Blunt will next star in The Young Victoria, which was released in the UK in March, with a US release due for later in the year. In November, Blunt will be seen in the much-anticipated period thriller, The Wolfman, opposite Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. Invincible Movie Review by star757

Invincible Movie Review by star757

This movie is based on the true story of Vince Papale, played by Mark Wahlberg. When the Philadelphia Eagles holds an open tryout for any guy off the street, Vince is the only one who makes the cut. Things aren't going so great in his life, and his friends at the bar where he works convince him to go. Greg Kinnear plays coach Dick Vermeil, Elizabeth Banks also costars as Vince's love interest. The movie follows Vince through some hardships in his life living in Philadelphia. The thing that he and his friends love the most is the Eagles. When Vince makes it onto the team there dreams come true. This movie was ok. I think the characters could have been developed better and the story line could have gone deeper. It seemed like it just brushed the surface. I would watch it on TV, but there are better, more inspiring football movie out there like Remember the Titans and Rudy. It is interesting because it is based on a true story, so they should have had a lot to work with to make it a better movie.

Space-time vortexes suck. Will Ferrell stars as has-been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, sucked into one and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world—a place of spectacular sights and super-scaled comedy known as the Land of the Lost. Sucked alongside him for the adventure are crack-smart research assistant Holly (Anna Friel) and a redneck survivalist (Danny McBride) named Will. Chased by T. rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only ally—a primate called Chaka (Jorma Taccone)—to navigate out of the hybrid dimension. Escape from this routine expedition gone awry and they’re heroes. Get stuck, and they’ll be permanent refugees in the Land of the Lost. Based on the classic television series created by Sid & Marty Krofft, Land of the Lost is directed by Brad Silberling and produced by Jimmy Miller and Sid & Marty Krofft.

Two days before his wedding, Doug and his three friends drive to Las Vegas for a blow-out bachelor party they'll never forget. But, in fact, when the three groomsmen wake up the next morning, they can't remember a thing. For some reason, they find a tiger in the bathroom and a six-month-old baby in the closet of their suite at Caesars Palace. The one thing they can't find is Doug. With no clue as to what transpired and little time to spare, the trio must retrace their hazy steps and all their bad decisions in order to figure out where things went wrong and hopefully get Doug back to L.A. in time to walk down the aisle.

A Greek tour guide named Georgia attempts to recapture her kefi (Greek for “mojo”) by guiding a ragtag group of tourists around Greece and showing them the beauty of her native land. Along the way, she manages to open their eyes to the wonders of an exotic foreign land while beginning to see the world through a new set of eyes in the process.

Away We Go is a contemporary comedy directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes from an original screenplay by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida. The movie follows the journey of an expectant couple (John Krasinski of The Office and Maya Rudolph of Saturday Night Live), as they travel the U.S. in search of a place to put down roots and raise a family. Rounding out the cast are Jeff Daniels, Carmen Ejogo, Jim Gaffigan, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Josh Hamilton, Allison Janney, Melanie Lynskey, Chris Messina, Catherine O’Hara, and Paul Schneider. Away We Go is produced and co-financed with Focus by Big Beach.
