Emily Blunt To Receive BAFTA/LA Britannia Award

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts/Los Angeles® (BAFTA/LA) will honor Golden Globe winning and BAFTA nominated actress Emily Blunt with the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year at the 2009 BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards on Thursday, November 5 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel.

“In just a few short years, Emily Blunt has gone from breakout success in My Summer of Love to blockbuster hits like The Devil Wears Prada and the upcoming The Young Victoria and The Wolfman,” says BAFTA/LA Chairman Peter Morris. “Emily continuously demonstrates an impressive range in her performances and with each movie solidifies her status as one of the best actresses of her generation.”

Emily Blunt shot to international prominence with her lead role in the multi award-winning British movie, My Summer of Love, for which she won the Most Promising Newcomer award at the 2004 Evening Standard Film Awards and was nominated for Best Newcomer at the 2004 British Independent Film Awards.

Blunt started her career at the 2002 Chichester Festival, where she played Juliet in a production of Romeo and Juliet. She made her West End debut opposite Dame Judi Dench in a production of The Royal Family. Her TV credits include Henry VIII, Death on the Nile, Foyle’s War and the critically-acclaimed Gideon’s Daughter, for which she won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in 2007.

In 2006 Blunt starred in The Devil Wears Prada opposite Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep. The critics shared the audience’s love for the film as well as for Blunt, calling her performance a “tour de force of smiling hostility”, “scene-stealing” and “a marvel at conveying the terror beneath the hauteur”. Blunt was nominated for a Golden Globe, a BAFTA for Supporting Actress as well as the BAFTA Rising Star Award. She also received nominations in the Breakthrough Female category at the 2006 Teen Choice Awards, and was honored with the Breakthrough Award at the 2006 Movieline Young Hollywood Awards.

Blunt’s other film credits include Charlie Wilson’s War, Wind Chill, The Great Buck Howard, Dan in Real Life, The Jane Austen Book Club, and most recently the box-office hit Sunshine Cleaning, opposite Amy Adams. Emily Blunt will next star in The Young Victoria, which was released in the UK in March, with a US release due for later in the year. In November, Blunt will be seen in the much-anticipated period thriller, The Wolfman, opposite Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins. In May 2009, Blunt will start work on Gulliver's Travels, playing the lead opposite Jack Black.
