Boogeyman Movie Review by movieviewr

Boogeyman Movie Review by movieviewr

Buy the Movie Poster for Boogeyman

In the brief lapse of time between Spider-Man its sequel, Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert joined forces with the German company Senator International to form Ghost House Pictures; a production company devoted to creating new and exciting horror pictures. After raising the bar for the genre in the 1980’s with films like The Evil Dead and Evil Dead II, Ghost House has given Raimi and Tapert an opportunity to “return to their roots” of low budget scares. Based in Tapert’s adopted home of New Zealand, the company’s unique focus is on combining elements of the monster movies that have become an American staple, and the Asian ghost films that have recently gained so much attention with US audiences.

Ghost House’s first release was a remake of the 2003 Japanese film Ju-on: The Grudge re-titled as The Grudge. To direct their American remake, Raimi and Tapert were able to recruit filmmaker Takashi Shimizu, the writer and director of the original Japanese version. The Grudge was a tremendous box office success, costing a mere ten million dollars to produce and earning back well over ten times that amount. Ghost House had discovered its formula and was ready to run with it.

The next film in the pipeline was an original story titled Boogeyman. When Raimi and Tapert merged with Senator, their European counterparts had already optioned the script which, coincidentally, fit in exactly with the kind of films that Ghost House was trying to produce. Stephen T. Kay, the director of the 2000 remake Get Carter, had yet to work in the genre and was excited to take his maiden voyage with producers as iconic as Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.

Together they crafted a decent film, laced with psychological twists and visual thrills. Boogeyman certainly isn’t the end-all of the horror genre, but it’s entertaining and good for a jump or two. And American audiences seemed to agree, rewarding it with a take of more than twice its budget. With Ghost House Pictures now batting two for two (financially anyway), one can imagine that Raimi will be wearing his producer’s hat for many years to come.

Pandorum Movie Review by gungadin

Pandorum Movie Review by gungadin

Buy the Movie Poster for Pandorum

Science Fiction Horror is a tough area to make films in. They are expensive, complicated, and most of all - at high risk of being labeled as unintentionally "remaking" other films. The quest for an "original" sci fi horror is daunting in todays film. "Pandorum" - starring veteran Dennis Quaid and up & coming Ben Foster - had a baseline storyline with potential. "Earth on brink of extinction - ship provides last hope for repopulation elsewhere - until something goes very wrong" Okay -sounds good, right ? Well, it wasn't so good. Despite solid acting efforts by Foster and Quaid, this screenplay drowned in its own imagined complexity. The story is told in such a disjointed fashion as the memories of the two main characters slowly return after a long deep space "hypersleep" that the viewer is left wondering whether he himself has fallen into a "hypersleep". The name "Pandorum" refers essentially to space madness - a concept we've seen many times - perhaps most famously on "star trek" - the original series - episode "Naked Time". The Pandorum that strikes certain crew members on this 123 year voyage aboard the starship "Elysium" howver, is far darker and disturbing than the image of Sulu running around half naked with a sword. It is in fact "Pandorum" which leads to events on the ship that jeopardizes the whole "survival of humanity" mission that the ship set out for in the first place. Its a movie that I found myself pasting together in my head after watching it - which is not how its supposed to be. A movie should flow clearly and logically WHILE watching it. This one didn't. I can't say don't see it. But I can say - don't rent it.

Munich Movie Review by movieviewr

Munich Movie Review by movieviewr

Buy the Movie Poster for Munich

In 1972 the “Olympics of Peace and Joy” in Munich, West Germany were violently disrupted when a group of militant Palestinian terrorists, known as “Black September”, kidnapped and killed eleven Israeli athletes, coaches, and officials. This highly public event reverberated throughout the world and sparked a powder-keg in what was already an intense relationship between the two groups. The Mossad, the Israeli national intelligence agency, reacted with its own brutal mission referred to as “Operation Wrath of God”.

Spielberg was no stranger to epic historical films (Saving Private Ryan, Empire of the Sun, Schindler’s List, etc.), and did indeed take an interest in the project. First he wanted Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning playwright Tony Kushner to add his unique perspective of humanity to it. Kushner’s work literally became the catalyst for the film, inspiring the entire creative team into action.

Munich was moderately quiet in the box office, but made a respectable splash in the awards circuit. It may not be end up being one of Spielberg’s most memorable pictures, but it is a bold and courageous one nonetheless.

War of the Worlds Movie Review by movieviewr

War of the Worlds Movie Review by movieviewr

Buy the Movie Poster for War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds would be the third installment in an informal “extraterrestrial life” trilogy that started back in 1977 with Close Encounters of the Third Kind and followed five years later with E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. Principle photography on the picture began a mere seven month’s before its scheduled release date. In effort to give the crew at Industrial Light & Magic enough time to complete the five hundred plus CGI effects, Spielberg started his shoot with the major action sequences.

With the big money shots in the bag, he and his tightly knit crew then headed back to west coast to hit the stages waiting for him at Universal and Twentieth Century Fox Studios. Seventy two days later Spielberg had his film in the can. After a quick and efficient post-production, War of the Worlds was released to an enthusiastic public.

Despite large holes in the plot, and a bad case of Tom Cruise over-exposure, the picture was decorated with generally favorable reviews. Audiences seemed to agree as the film went on to gross well over two hundred million dollars domestically and over five hundred million world wide. Spielberg had once again proved his dominancy over the summer popcorn flicks.

It's not his life he guards so fiercely but his hope for the future; a hope he has carried and protected for 30 years and is determined to realize. Only one other man in this ruined world understands the power Eli holds, and is determined to make it his own: Carnegie, the self-appointed despot of a makeshift town of thieves and gunmen. The Birds Review by movieviewr

The Birds Movie Review by movieviewr

Buy the Movie Poster for The Birds

Three years elapsed between the release of Hitchcock's last film and this one. This was the largest gap between films that Hitchcock had had in his filmmaking career to this point, but he wasn't just taking time off. He was working on this film: probably the most technically difficult film that he has ever created.
The story isn't set in a standard three act format. In fact, there is no real format at all. Some refer to it as more of a poem than a story as it holds no real beginning and no real end.
The film is about a woman who follows a man up to his weekend home. She is only there a short while when thousands of birds start taking over the town and killing it's residents. Hitchcock has used birds in many of his films to represent and mark chaos.
They have been seen in Sabotage, The Lady Vanishes, Vertigo, Psycho, Jamaica Inn, and a few others. Here they appear to create the ultimate chaos and shut down the world as the characters know it. This is a project that literally only Hitchcock could have pulled off.

On what should have been a fun-filled day at the races, Nick O'Bannon has a horrific premonition in which a bizarre sequence of events causes multiple race cars to crash, sending flaming debris into the stands, brutally killing his friends and causing the upper deck of the stands to collapse on him. When he comes out of this grisly nightmare Nick panics, persuading his girlfriend, Lori, and their friends, Janet and Hunt, to leave... escaping seconds before Nick's frightening vision becomes a terrible reality. Thinking they've cheated death, the group has a new lease on life, but unfortunately for Nick and Lori, it is only the beginning. As his premonitions continue and the crash survivors begin to die one-by-one--in increasingly gruesome ways--Nick must figure out how to cheat death once and for all before he, too, reaches his final destination.
