Three years elapsed between the release of Hitchcock's last film and this one. This was the largest gap between films that Hitchcock had had in his filmmaking career to this point, but he wasn't just taking time off. He was working on this film: probably the most technically difficult film that he has ever created.
The story isn't set in a standard three act format. In fact, there is no real format at all. Some refer to it as more of a poem than a story as it holds no real beginning and no real end.
The film is about a woman who follows a man up to his weekend home. She is only there a short while when thousands of birds start taking over the town and killing it's residents. Hitchcock has used birds in many of his films to represent and mark chaos.
They have been seen in Sabotage, The Lady Vanishes, Vertigo, Psycho, Jamaica Inn, and a few others. Here they appear to create the ultimate chaos and shut down the world as the characters know it. This is a project that literally only Hitchcock could have pulled off.
