Paris, je t'aime (or “Paris, I Love You” in English) is a short film collection featuring the talents of twenty one international filmmakers in eighteen segments which showcase the various regions and neighborhoods that make up the incredible city of Paris. The project started as an idea from French television director Tristan Carné. With Tykwer on board, the Coen brothers agreed to sign on as well and with that the list of filmmakers began to grow.

Shrink - now in the prize catalog

We have just added a new DVD to the Prize Catalog on Popcornmonsters.com.

Buy the movie poster for Shrink.

What happens when the people we count on to hold us together…are barely holding it together themselves? Jonas Pate's Shrink is a striking, fast-paced exposé of the “other” Hollywood, featuring folks living outside their comfort zone and the people who put them there. Henry Carter (Kevin Spacey) is a psychiatrist with an A-list clientele, including a once-famous actress (Saffron Burrows), an insecure young writer (Mark Webber), and a comically obsessive-compulsive superagent (Dallas Roberts). Henry is not in a good place, however. He has been asked to take his first pro bono case, a troubled teenage girl from a neighborhood far from the Hollywood hills. Considering his present state of mind, is he ready for the real-life troubles of a young woman who loves the world of movies he has become so jaded by? At its core, Shrink is a study of control and our endless need for it, even when it grows increasingly impossible to obtain. Writer Thomas Moffett uses classic archetypes in this modern Hollywood tale, but never pushes them over the edge of credibility. Performed by a well-matched cast at the top of their form, the result is both satisfying and exhilarating. Watching Shrink makes us feel like voyeurs looking through a window into the lives of people who look great, feel worse, and end up behaving badly.

Rumor Has It Review featuring Jennifer Aniston

This week Popcornmonsters.com is featuring the movies of Jennifer Aniston. Look for her in Rumor Has It. Buy the Movie Poster for Rumor Has It.

This was a good movie. My husband did not like it, but he did watch the whole thing. It stars Jennifer Aniston as Sarah, a woman returning home to Pasadena with her fiancee, that no one knows about, played my Mark Ruffalo. Her sister that she's not close to is about to be married. Her mother died when she was nine and she doesn't feel like she's ever fit in with the rich Pasadena crowd. Sarah is questioning who she is, how she fits in with her family, and if she will truly be happied married. Before her sister's wedding, Sarah learns from her grandmother that her mom ran away to Cabo for three days right before her wedding. At the engagement party her fiancee points out that she was born just under 9 months from the day her parents married. This coupled with the previous information about her mother gets her wondering if whoever her mother had a fling with is her true father. This movie is set as a sequel to The Graduate. Sarah learns that her mother and grandmother slept with the same man and this was the basis for the book. The movie follows Sarah's quest to find out about her mother, the mysterious man played by Kevin Costner, and how she fits in. Will she find him? What will happen with her relationship with her fiancee? Who is her real father? I thought this movie was ok. A light romantic comedy with some twists.

American Son Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

American Son Movie Review by Derek_Fleek

Buy the Movie Poster for American Son

Earning a Grand Jury Prize nomination at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Miramax Films presents American Son, an underdeveloped and ineffective character study that benefits from the acting chops of its leads and a few moments that portray an accurate portrait of an American soldier and his farewell to his family and friends before he deploys to Iraq.

With just 96 hours to say his goodbyes and make peace with his friends and family, Mike Holland (Nick Cannon) finds himself in a difficult situation when he meets the love of his life and, in just four days, has to find a gracious way to inform her, his friends, and his family of his departure.

I was expecting a more complete storyline, probing the difficulties of the situation itself. From that perspective, American Son fails to resonate emotionally. Instead, you're left with a beat-boxing and drug-crazed exposition, complete with prostitutes and a violent look at the slums of Los Angeles. In that aspect, it's full of cliches and ultimately disappointing.

Director Neil Abramson's reflection on war has potential (see his previous work Soldier Child) and does a nice job of making a few good points, but ultimately misfires with his path being an unconnected, off-balance one. The truth is that the film often falls off track and doesn't have the necessary power to find its way back again.

It's the sensational performances by Nick Cannon and Matt O'Leary that keep the film compelling, despite the fact that its attempts to make a statement fall flat. Given that the film does have a some good moments to offer, I don't discourage people from seeing it. It's far from a poorly made film, just a routine one that doesn't have much creativity at its core. What you're left with is something that's been done before, and in a much better fashion. It's not the first film featured with sex, drugs, and hostilities and it certainly won't be the last.

This indie film's special features are limited to three which aren't particularly interesting or entertaining. These sections include "On Leave in Bakersfield: Behind the Scenes of American Son" which is a walk-through of the filming process, two deleted scenes appropriately removed from the film with optional commentary, and feature length audio commentary by director Neil Abramson and producers Danielle Renfrew and Michael Roiff. 2/5 stars
