American Gangster was a huge hit at the movie theater and it is easily to see why. There are several great actors including Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington, and Cuba Gooding Jr., but Denzel Washington outshines them all. I have always been a fan of Denzel, and this movie he is cast in the perfect role. He is Frank Lucas, a black drug lord in Harlem in the late 60's. He is an unbelievable businessman who does not take no for an answer, and rules the drug world in Harlem. He finds a way to get heroine directly from the source and much more concentrated than other dealers. He sets up a network that makes him a hero in Harlem, rolling in money, and seemingly untouchable. His family becomes involved in the business and they are making millions. He has found a way to outsmart the Italian Mafia and all the other drug dealers. Russell Crowe is a cop that is not crooked like the rest of the cops in New York/New Jersey. He is ostrisized from the police force after returning a million dollars, that he could have kept. The other members of the force do not appreciate it because most are on the take. So Crowe is sent as a special investigator to look at the drug trade. Crowe sets out to find who is behind the "Blue Magic" heroine. Will he find out it is Frank Lucas? Will a huge chase ensue? You will have to watch the movie to find out. It is about 2 1/2 hours, rather long for a movie, but it is well worth it. There is a lot of drug use, and nudity, so do not watch this one with the children. It has something that most movies lately lack and that is a great story. Denzell Washington was excellent in his portrayal of Frank Lucas, based on a true story.
