A washed up golf pro working at a driving range tries to qualify for the US Open in order to win the heart of his successful rival's girlfriend.

For centuries, golf has been a gentleman's game. A game of tradition, etiquette and, above all, sportsmanship... until now. Happy Gilmore is a hockey player skating on thin ice who discovers that his wicked slap shot easily converts into a crushing 400 yard tee shot with the potential for big bucks. Happy's career takes a 180 degree swing and lands him on the Pro Golf Tour, where he's about to turn the gentleman's game into a contact sport. A working stiff with a temper as short as his drives are long, Happy doesn't fit on the manicured greens of the country club. His outrageous antics, both on and off the course, cause an uproar among the players and officials; but his roughhouse style attracts hordes of new blue collar fans. Now Happy is going from rinks to links--and driving the game of golf straight into the ground.

Rannulph Junuh has returned to Savannah a damaged, tortured soul, his youthful innocence shattered by the trauma of World War I. While he's been gone, his former fiancee, Adele Invergordon, has devoted herself to fulfilling her late father's dream of building a world-class golf course on a nearby island. To keep the dream alive in the depths of the Great Depression, she proposes an exhibition tournament featuring golf superstars Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. When city officials insist that the match can only take place if a local golfer participates, Hardy turns to Junuh to defend his hometown's honor. Along the way he faces down his demons, fights for the love of the woman he abandoned and hits a hole in one with the help of a black caddie named Bagger who offers down-home folk wisdom, spiritual guidance and the secret to a perfect swing.
