This movie is about diamonds mined in Africa. It begins with the RUF raiding a village in Sierra Leone. They drive the people from their homes, kill people, cut off their hands, and take the strongest men to work the diamond mines. Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounson) is one of the men taken and separated from his wife, baby and beloved son. This is a very grim movie, violent and all the more scary because of the reality it is based on. It also stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Danny Archer, an African and diamond smuggler. Jennifer Connoley plays Maddy Bowen, a journalist interested in Danny's smuggling and learning who is really behind it. The whole movie follows Solomon who found a large pink diamond worth a lot of money. He hides it, but when he crosses paths with Danny their lives become linked. Danny wants the diamond, and Solomon wants to find his family. A very good movie, but violent and difficult to watch at points. It's hard to imagine that things really happen like this. A very well told story, and you really feel for the characters.
